It's a beautiful fall day outside, sunny and mild.  I sprinkled fertilizer on the flowerbeds beside the driveway and in the notch of the prairie garden.  Then I raked a wheelbarrow of leaves to dump on the daffodil bed beside the driveway, and trampled down the leaves.

The birdfeeders still have seed, but I saw a small flock of cardinals and a squirrel at them earlier.  I also saw a fox or coyote trotting around the south lot behind the bushes, but I couldn't get a clear look.

"Beyond Babel"

In the beginning,
God made the world
not with a Word

but with math,
and out of math
came music, and
they were languages
all of their own.

When the sons of Adam
and daughters of Eve
spread over the Earth,
they spoke one language,
counted the beasts of the field
and sang praises to the Lord.

Then they raised a tower
toward Heaven, and
God was displeased.

When the Tower of Babel
fell, the languages of mankind
were confused, but math and music
remained as intelligible as ever.

For these were the languages
with which God had made the world,
and there was no taking them back out
of it ever again -- the math was in
the seeds of every sunflower and
the music in the tongue of every bell.

The angels wondered how long
it would take the humans to realize
they could still understand each other.

"Speaking Cat"

They may not speak Human,
but cats understand it just fine.

Do you speak Cat?

They think you can, if they
speak LOUDLY ... and ... CLEARLY.

I've learned a few basic phrases,
like the yodeling love song of "raaAAOOow"
and the low, throaty "err-OW, err-OW" that
means, "Come, kittens, I have brought food."

I wouldn't say I speak it well,
but like saying, "Hola," in Mexico,
even a clumsy attempt works wonders.
