This is an advance announcement for the Tuesday, August 7, 2012 Poetry Fishbowl. This time the theme will be "modern myths." I'll be soliciting ideas for heroic figures, mythologists, archetypes, iconic objects, tools and weapons, famous jewels, symbolic locations, places that give rise to their own mythology, mythic plotlines, events that turn into stories, concepts that grow so huge they become a significant part of the culture, modern ideas not really covered by historic myths, and poetic forms in particular.

Also, I need a volunteer to host the linkback poem.  Please contact me if you're willing to do that; it will get you on the Donors list.

If you're interested, mark the date on your calendar, and please hold actual prompts until the "Poetry Fishbowl Open" post next week.  (If you're not available that day, or you live in a time zone that makes it hard to reach me, you can leave advance prompts.)  Meanwhile, if you want to help with promotion, please feel free to link back here or repost this on your blog.

This article compares hands-off and hands-on nature education.

I do believe that unstructured interaction with nature is more valuable.  But in order to have that without wrecking nature, we need a LOT more nature than people.  If there's a big patch of nature with only a few people, their damage tends to be trivial and quickly repaired.  If there's only a small patch of nature with a lot of people, it doesn't take long for them to demolish it unless they are being exceptionally careful.

Drought

Western forests could see a century of drought, in which case, much of that territory will change from forest to scrubland.

Looking at my yard, I expect to lose some trees and shrubs.  I'm currently watering the contorta willow and the rowan tree, in hopes of salvaging those.  But I won't be surprised if they die anyhow, and there are other things turning brown too.  When I replant, I will probably choose different species. There's no point trying to grow something that can't withstand whatever the local conditions now are.  I'll discount things that were newly planted, though, and only count established plants as drought vulnerable.

Dude.  If your house is half a mile away from mine, and I can make out the words from my yard, you've turned up the music TOO LOUD.

I can only imagine they must be wearing earplugs or something; at close range the noise must be deafening.

Pepper Spray Pike and his buddy are no longer employed at the university.  I wish them a long and fruitless unemployment in this cutthroat economy until they learn not to torture other human beings.
