ysabetwordsmith: Cartoon of me in Wordsmith persona (schrodinger's heroes)
Schrodinger's Heroes  is an apocryphal television show about quantum physics and keeping the Earth safe from alternate dimensions.  If you're not familiar with it, you can browse the menu page.  The following images may make more sense if you have read the descriptions for Melannen's characters and my characters.  LOL_Heroes is a branch of LOL picspam inspired by Schrodinger's Heroes.

These images all relate to Valentine's Day.  They span sexual, asexual, kinky, and various other forms of romance.  Because love is for everyone who wants some.  Characters appear as themselves or as alters.  You can see the images in my LJ scrapbook.

[livejournal.com profile] ariestess is hosting a free poem day today.  Leave prompts and get a tanka.  There are individual and collective perks for donations.

Not sure what to prompt?  I recommend "The Five Hundred Essential Japanese Seasonal Words" which are used in both haiku and tanka.  Just pick one or more things you like from that list.  Frex, I asked for "cherry blossoms" (spring) which is my favorite; I've been writing these things long enough to know some of the terms off the top of my head.

I would really like to see folks support this project, because it's not only poetry but short-short poetry.  Those are easy things to overlook in the mainstream, and easy things to boost with crowdfunding.  Plus with a project producing tiny items like this, it's convenient for folks with a small budget; $2-5 is typical of what magazines pay for tanka or haiku (if they pay at all).

"E-Volution" is really intended to suggest how ebooks and publishing should develop, and it's a terrific description ... but it also counts as science fiction, because it describes the future and is entertaining.  How cool is that?

You can now read my Torn World article "Northern Game: Ice-Gliders."
The northern game of ice-gliders involves throwing a large game piece across ice or snow, often aiming at a target to score points.
A short summary is visible to the public; contributors can read the whole thing.  This game was inspired by a variety of different activities that involve sliding something over a smooth surface, such as snow snakes and curling.  I really had fun doing the research.

If you like these items and want to see more like them, please consider sending me credits or karma through Torn World's crowdfunding options.  Not a Torn World member, but still want to support the work? I have a permanent PayPal button on my LJ profile page.

ysabetwordsmith: Maryam Smith in a tophat (steamsmith)
This is an advance announcement for the Tuesday, February 21, 2012 Poetry Fishbowl.  The extra series fishbowl comes as a perk from the February 7 fishbowl reaching the $200 goal.  An audience poll selected "The Steamsmith" as the poetic series to be featured.  I'll be soliciting ideas for Maryam Smith, her family and friends, other steamsmiths, historic alchemists and odd scientists, historic gender-benders, famous Africans or Brits, steampunk artifacts, alchemical science, the four elements, magical artifacts, the city of London, the British Empire, Africa, squabbles over race/class/gender/etc., side scenes from previous events, linchpins and other points of divergence, everyday issues with peculiar developments in nether-England, and poetic forms (especially British or African ones) in particular.

The Steamsmith series draws from both steampunk and alternate history roots, although it's not a very close match for anything else I've seen.  If you aren't familiar with those genres, you have time to do some exploring before the fishbowl opens.  Bear in mind that this series happens in a world where scientific method  still works, but the answers to the questions it asks  are mostly different.  Atomic physics, biology, energy -- those are un-the-same.  This means I may wind up playing fast and loose with the prompts more than usual, and may take longer to write poems because they demand more research.  On the other hoof, it's a great opportunity for "What if...?" or "How does...?" and other question prompts.  Also, Maryam is polite but highly interactive, so don't be surprised if she crosses paths with more people than just me and [livejournal.com profile] marina_bonomi.  The series is still fairly new, which means this fishbowl gives you a chance to have a big impact on how it develops and what it covers.

If you're interested, mark the date on your calendar, and please hold actual prompts until the "Poetry Fishbowl Open" post next week.  This fishbowl is open to everyone, and you may share the announcement with anyone interested in the motifs that The Steamsmith incorporates.

People can do far stranger things than most folks would believe.  To me, this is normal.  I'm familiar with science and the way many things spread out in a bell curve.  I'm also familiar with Nature's tendency to treat DNA like the kitchen junk drawer.  A + B means the far ends of that bell curve contain some truly amazing junk.

Here's a new theory: life on Earth may have begun on land, not in the sea, within hot volcanic pools.  This is really useful if you're designing a planet without oceans for some reason, but it has volcanoes.
