ysabetwordsmith: (Fly Free)

This is Part 2 of a freebie poem from the July 5, 2011 Poetry Fishbowl, thanks to new prompter [livejournal.com profile] quennessa.  (If you haven't read it yet, start with Part 1.)  This is a remodeled version of the awful plot from Sucker Punch.

WARNING: This entire poem is violent, and contains many misogynist characters bedeviling the heras.  It may be triggery for some people. Part 2 contains references to nonconsensual bondage, women using their sexuality for manipulation, murder of men who are not nice people, and semi-accidental arson.  If such imagery tends to upset you, then you might want to skip this poem.  But if you're okay with valiant heras struggling against terrible obstacles, here it is.

The serial poetry poll turned into a neck-and-neck race, rapidly trading lead until late yesterday and finally breaking a tie today:

The Origami Mage!
Shahana the Paladin!
Monster House!
Aaaaaaand the Paladin wins by a nose!

We had a whopping 20 votes for this poll, which is a lot for any poll on my LJ, and about double the usual participation for a post-fishbowl poll late in the week.  From this I gather that people got especially excited about series on offer this time.  Yay!

July donors (plus the folks carried over from June) will get a chance to give me prompts about Shahana the Paladin and friends.  Then I will post a new poem for free.  If you haven't already met her, check out the new "Path of the Paladins" entry on the serial poetry page with links to the two poems in this series so far.  If you're not already a donor and you want to give me a prompt for this series, you can toss me a buck or two and that will count -- there's a permanent PayPal button on my LJ profile page.

The prompt window is now CLOSED. See the followup poll about the resulting three poems.

The serial poetry poll has designated Shahana the Paladin as the series receiving the free poem, since the July Poetry Fishbowl met the $150 threshold.  She's new this month from the low fantasy theme, appearing in the poem "Shine On," and then "The Ones They Leave Behind" is a sequel showing someone else's perspective.  There is also a new entry on the serial poetry page, "Path of the Paladins," which describes the series and links to the two poems.

The window is now open for prompts, and I'll probably leave it open through the weekend since this tends to be a low-traffic time on LiveJournal.  We have a unique opportunity here.  While this isn't the first time a brand-new character has become instantly popular, it's the first time we've had a chance to put a new character through a focused prompt session like this.  You have almost a blank slate.  You can explore what happens to Shahana and Ari next, dig into the features of the place they live, nose around for other supporting characters, investigate the faith-powered paladin magic, whatever appeals to you.  I have some nascent ideas about the characters, setting, backstory, and magical system; but very little is solid yet.  There's a lot more room than usual to influence major, fundamental aspects that will have an impact on everything else that can happen later.  So wake up your muses and let's make some poetry!

I've made a major update to the "Serial Poetry" page on my PenUltimate Productions website   There are FOUR new sections, wow!  This is the most new series launched in a fishbowl yet.

"Gloryroad Crossing" is about a little hamlet where adventurers come between adventures.  So far there are poems about the barkeeper and the baker who live there.

"The Ocracies" is a setting designed to explore other governments than monarchies in fantasy.  It begins with the Plutocracy of Aurea, seen from the perspective of two different citizens.

"Path of the Paladins" begins with a ruined village and a world-weary hera.  Shahana the Paladin soon picks up a traveling companion.  The second poem in this series shows someone else's perspective.

"Sort of Heroes" introduces Nib and Brod, ex-henchmen of an evil overlord, and the sword that's going to teach them how to be heroes.  The first poem posted was actually written quite some time ago, and just sponsored.  The second poem introduces a friend of theirs; it's reprinted from a fantasy magazine.  The third one was written during the July fishbowl, making this a series, and hasn't been sponsored yet but is listed.

The new Fiorenza poem is also listed, "From the Free City."  It will become available after "Fiorenza and the Witch-Son" is fully funded and posted.

The July theme was low fantasy.  It started a bit slow, then prompts trickled in, and kept coming in small spurts throughout the day.  There were 83 comments, including quite a lot of crosstalk; some ideas that I used were from there instead of the main prompt comments.  (Anything is fair game.  You give each other good ideas.)  I worked from noon to 3:30 A.M. which is half an hour longer than my previous record; that's about 13 hours 30 minutes of work time, allowing for lunch and supper breaks.  Length ran long this month, with 7 epics -- nearly half the 16 poems -- and the others medium or long.  All the poems were free verse except one, but quite a few used a specific verse type, such as quatrains.  There is also a lot of humor relating to fantasy roleplaying games, in addition to famous tropes of low fantasy pulp fiction.

A total of 15 people sent prompts.  Welcome to new prompter [livejournal.com profile] quennessa, who both inspired and qualified the posting of the second freebie poem.  Part 1 and Part 2 of "Playing with Babydoll" are up, and the others will appear over the next couple of days.

We crossed the $150 threshold, so you've earned an extra serial poem!  The serial poem poll eventually settled on Shahana the Paladin.  If you are a current donor, please check out the call for prompts.  (If not, a donation will let you into this.)  Also, the generally sponsored poetry poll is complete.  In addition to the two $10 poems, $14 went into microfunding open epics, so you have new verses to enjoy.  In fact, you broke the previous record for highest donation total in a fishbowl, woohoo!

Future Perk:  Since this is also the third time you've earned the extra serial poem, that activates the next perk threshold that I had in mind.  Cross the $200 mark, and you get an extra Poetry Fishbowl  focused on a popular series.  That's likely to be a half-day rather than a whole day, because working with that tight a focus is harder; but we'll see how it plays out.

The audience and my muse went nuts with serial poetry this time.  There are FOUR new series listed on the "Serial Poetry" page of my PenUltimate Productions website.  Three of those are brand-new; the fourth expanded a previous poem into a series, thus earning it an entry on the page.  There is also a new Fiorenza poem, which will become available after the conclusion of "Fiorenza and the Witch-Son."

I came across this post of quotes regarding space exploration.  There are many fine arguments and thoughts therein. Mine include...

To the government: "WTF were you thinking?  Go fund some new space transport so we don't have to beg for it from people who don't like us!"

To NASA: "I see I'm not the only geek who has a hard time convincing people of the obvious and the necessary."

To everyone else: "This is why we should have ready access to space."
"Our Dreams Take Flight"
"Vessel of Dreams"
"One Ship Tall"
