I saw this site about taking a vacation to swim with polar bears.

*blink*

Polar bears are predators. They hunt in the water for fish and seals. To sharks, humans look a lot like seals. Somehow I'm not terribly convinced that bears think much differently. It's food-sized and it's flopping around in the water ...

... nooooo way am I ever swimming with bears. At least with dolphins, the only risk is interspecies sexual harassment, not getting eaten.

I've been exploring [livejournal.com profile] addme_creative, a community dedicated to connecting writers, artists, hobbyists, and other creative people on LJ. I've made several new friends this way; it's a lot of fun. The "creative" slant means you get more than just idle chatter about some stranger's life.

Today I spotted another interesting community, [livejournal.com profile] addmyartjournal. It features a new art LJ every two days, courtesy of the community moderators. Those of you interested in art and/or cyberfunded creativity might want to check it out.

[livejournal.com profile] shadesong's friend [livejournal.com profile] wired_lizard is looking for living space and employment in the Boston area. Details here.

I am intrigued by the ways in which cyber relationships are similar to and different from facetime ones. I've been thinking more and more that one of the limitations of cyberspace (not being physically present) is actually counterbalanced by one of its strengths (nonlocality/networking). I'm nowhere near Boston -- but maybe someone in my audience is, maybe even someone in need of a housemate or an employee like [livejournal.com profile] wired_lizard. So I'm boosting the signal and relaying the news.

[livejournal.com profile] azurelunatic has an excellent post about LiveJournal etiquette. If you're relatively new to blogging and/or LJ, there's a lot of great information in here on how to behave and how other people will behave.

I spotted a quiz that purports to determine what type of cliched slash plot you are.

Of course ...

Which Slashy Plot Cliche Are You?

Wow, your plots are actually pretty original...we're not sure we know how to make fun of you.
Take this quiz!

... any of my characters could have told you that, the poor buggers. Well, at least we know the quiz works, sort of.

Monsanto has created a bacterium that can kill all the plants living in a patch of soil. I am not at all comfortable with this company having that capability. And I'm going to keep a sharp eye out for complaints of dead fields from farmers who are in any way inconveniencing the Big Seed Companies. If that thing gets out, we are DEEPLY SCREWED. My inner gengineer is going "Eek eek eek they did the stupid thing eek eek eek."

... in the food web. If you forget, these creatures will help remind you of it.

I had two thoughts after reading this. 1) Remembering "The Doom of Planet D" *shudder* 2) Alex Levinton probably also knows why a candiru is scarier than a piranha.

Fair warning: while my discussion is reasonably couth, the actual article is not. I assert, however, that the author has not mistaken four-letter words for commas. He uses them as exclamation points.
