Today's Adventures
Oct. 23rd, 2026 10:46 pmToday we went on the Fall Foliage Tour at Whiteside Garden.
Sourgum leaves are turning red.

The weather was perfect, sunny and mild. We took a different path than usual, so we got to see some different trees. There is less color than usual for this time of year, due to unseasonably warm and dry conditions, but some of the leaves were turning.
Among the things we saw were Virginia creeper, ginkgo, burning bush, golden rain tree, purple asters (several types), daylilies (still blooming!!! the late Professor Whiteside's lifework), sweetgum, buckeye, Japanese maple (several), flowering dogwood (several), oakleaf hydrangea, fall-blooming witch hazel, tulip poplar, bald cypress, purple beautyberry, Persian ironwood, hardy banana, European weeping beech, American beech, holly, sedum (possibly 'Autumn Joy'), sumac 'Tiger Eyes', and Harry Lauder's walking stick.
One of the new things I learned is that Illinois has a native species of bamboo, Giant Cane. I had no idea. Fascinating.
It was a very pretty fall walk.
