Today's Adventures
May. 1st, 2026 10:22 pmToday we went to the May Day and Full Moon Walk activities at Whiteside Garden.
We picked up friends on the way over. Then we stopped at Jersey Mike's to pick up cold sandwiches for a picnic supper.
The first part was the May Day celebration. This included assorted family fun activities such as a bucket of bubble wands (which I always play with), sidewalk chalk, and several lawn games including Jenga, tangleball, and croquet. I never did get to the lawn games, and I wanted to play a couple of those.
We made flower crowns. A variety of methods were supporting, including my favorite of making a vine or twig circle to tuck the flowers in. There were also ribbons, thread, scissors, and other tools available which helped a lot. I'll have to remember the thread for the next time I do this.
The band turned out to be a flute quartet, playing a variety of mostly older music that was perfect for the occasion. One song they did was "Beautiful Dreamer" which is a favorite of mine. :D
They had a well-built Maypole set up for people to dance around, which was great fun. There was a bonfire going in a metal fire ring too. A small table offered cookies and fruit. After we danced the Maypole, we picked up our picnic package and ate supper.
I picked out a wildflower-printed tote bag from the gift shop. We got to talk with various members of the staff, volunteers, and a few other visitors. I like the people, the activities, and the location.
The Full Moon Walk started well before sunset and moonrise, so we had fun walking through the garden looking for white plants that show up well at night. Magnolias, fringe tree, and viburnums really stand out. They also have some impressive woodland wildflowers.
As it got dusky, we went up on the hill where there's more visibility outside the wooded area. We listened to a fun presentation about the Flower Moon. When the moon rose, it was really rich orange, likely from dust raised by farmers plowing their fields.
By the time we walked back down, it was quite dark. I should have brought a flashlight and will try to remember that for future moon walks.
We also finished reading the New Orleans Cuisine cookbook. Among the recipes we marked are Crawfish Pies, Crawfish Fried Rice, Oyster Pâté, and Shrimp and Leek Pizza.
It has been a fun and wonderful day.
