Here are the content notes for "When You Learn to Read."

"When you learn to read you will be born again…and you will never be quite so alone again."
-- Rumer Godden

"A Hint of the Resurrection"
Story Date: Wednesday, June 3, 2015
Summary: Aidan finds out about Saraphina's cousin Josué.

"Where You Find Light"
Story Date: Early June, 2016
Summary: Josué and Aidan set up a house for earthquake refugees, complete with books.
California Avery Casa de Esperanza appears in the location notes for this poem.

Given that Josué grew up in Haiti, and Aidan would happily buy him a bicycle -- or even several for different purposes -- it is likely that Josué routinely bikes around their tiny town, its outlying clusters of housing, and other nearby communities or attractions. While the central California heat might discourage some people, it is unlikely to bother a black kid who grew up in sweltering conditions, particularly since so much of the area is shady pine forest.

Biking a mile takes between 4 and 6 minutes at an average speed of 9 to 14 mph, an average speed most people ride. The time may vary because of several factors, such as your fitness level, bike type, terrain, weather, traffic, etc.

How Long Does It Take to Bike a Mile?

How Far Is Too Far to Go to Work by Bike?
At its core, cycling 5 to 10 miles usually takes 25 to 50 minutes, depending on speed and route complexity. This timeframe allows cycling to fit easily into many people's daily schedules without cutting into their work or personal time too heavily.
DISTANCE DIFFICULTY
0 – 5 miles Easy
6 – 10 miles Manageable
11 – 15 miles Difficult
16 – 20 miles Very difficult
21 – 25 miles Bordering on insane
25+ miles Totally insane

Depending on conditions, a day trip on a bicycle can range anywhere from 65 to 15 miles. Even the shortest distance is far larger than the whole of Avery and its surrounding clusters of housing. It would be quite easy to reach other nearby towns, and even a lake.

How Far Can I Ride in a Day?

Reading is important for children and others, especially multilingual learners.

Adults often worry that exposing children to multiple languages will slow their development. The opposite is true. While novice speakers often mix up languages and make mistakes, this is a normal part of the learning process that happens to everyone, and they will figure it out usually without even needing adult help. The younger the child, the easier it is to learn new languages; it gets harder as they get older, but less so for polyglots than for monolingual people. While formal efforts tend to be structured, the natural way to learn languages is simply by osmosis -- being around people who speak and use them casually. Language use at home is good, especially reading to children, but better still is having a community of people -- even just a couple of families -- who share heritage languages and use them together. If the children at Casa de Esperanza find this mix too challenging, people may sort activities into Haitian Creole Day, Spanish Day, English Day, etc.
