Here are the character notes for "When You Learn to Read" Part 1: Sanon Family.
Dieusel Sanon -- He has dark brown skin, black eyes, and nappy black hair buzzed short. His heritage is Haitian. He speaks English, French, Haitian Creole, and is learning Spanish. He is 30 years old in 2016.
Dieusel is the husband of Celavie (35), father of son Hurby (14), son Vilsaint (11), son Kervin (9), son Ronil (7), daughter Edeline (5), and daughter Timafi (2). They lived in Haiti on a farm somewhat southwest from Port-au-Prince. In 2012, the family's home and farm washed away in Hurricane Sandy. Hurby (then 12) suffered head trauma in a landslide, and other relatives had lesser injuries. Because of that, the family was evacuated to America and decided to stay there. They first landed in Florida and stayed there a few months, but eventually they settled in Oakland, California.
During the Big One on Saturday, May 28, 2016, the Sanon family was in Oakland. It experienced a 7.0 earthquake with intensity IX and shaking about 40 seconds. Many well-made buildings were damaged, and older ones were often destroyed. The Sanons had to evacuate because their apartment building was ruled unfit for habitation. However, they were able to salvage many of their possessions and crammed it all into Dieusel's work van. Since the vehicle was designed for off-road repair work, they actually managed to drive it all the way to Avery, California.
The family stayed at a shelter in Avery until better housing became available. In mid-June, they moved into Casa de Esperanza, owned by Aidan Spencer. There they took the basement apartment. They have been making new friends in the area. Ever the optimist, Dieusel is trying to rebuild his repair business and is convinced that the earthquake has left him plenty of job opportunities. He wears men's work clothes, mostly in shades of gray and white.

Oakland is a city in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area in the U.S. state of California. It is the county seat of and the most populous city in Alameda County, with a population of 440,646 in 2020.[12] A major West Coast port, Oakland is the most populous city in the East Bay, the third most populous city in the Bay Area, and the eighth most populous city in California. It serves as the Bay Area's trade center: the Port of Oakland is the busiest port in Northern California, and the fifth- or sixth-busiest in the United States.[14] A charter city,[15] Oakland was incorporated on May 4, 1852, in the wake of the state's increasing population due to the California gold rush.[4]

The Sanon family (Haitian) was in Oakland. It experienced a 7.0 earthquake with intensity IX and shaking about 40 seconds. Many well-made buildings were damaged, and older ones were often destroyed.
