Today's Adventures
Jan. 31st, 2026 09:44 pmToday we went on an unplanned outing that proved quite productive.
First we stopped in Charleston to get the mail.
Next we went to Mattoon. We picked up a friend to drop off elsewhere.
We visited Neimann Foods, where we found chicken chunks and a few other things. They had a cheap kind of fish that I didn't recognize, swai, which turns out to be unsafe. Then on the way out, I spotted Girl Scouts selling cookies, so we bought four boxes of those. :D
For lunch we picked up hamburgers from Dairy Queen.
Then we went to the mall. They didn't have any flyers out, but we confirmed the Valentines sale next weekend.
We started at Rural King and had great luck there. I found 2 pairs of thick lounging socks and 2 pairs of other winter socks.
My partner Doug found a pair of black jeans.
I got 2 T-shirts, one cream with a colorful pawprint, the other teal with snails and flowers that says, "It's okay to go slow." Sadly the mulberry one I liked had the picture on the back, so I had to skip that one.
I spotted a gorgeous button-front cardigan of evergreen chenille. \o/ I wasn't even looking; I had just about given up on finding nice cardigans anymore. I got it big so I can wear it over other clothes. Consequently the sleeves are too long, but that's okay, I can roll them shorter.
We got the paddle-trigger mousetraps. They didn't have the right kind of icemelt. WARNING: icemelt is frequently fradulent. I found multiple varieties that claimed to be plant-safe, or "less corrosive than salt," but the active ingredient was ... NaCl. Regular salt. Know your chemistry and check the ingredients.
So we went to Home Depot. They had the right kind, which is a magnesium salt, but in a bag rather than a jug. We can just pour some in the jug.
Also they have their seeds and dormant plants in. It's way too early to buy any plants, but I did see a brand of organic open-pollinated seeds that I wish to shop, plus browsing whatever else they have. They're likely cheaper than catalog seeds for anything that's available in the store. It'll have to wait for another trip though.
It has been a fun and very productive day. We found all the things! :D
