Shiv had two foster families that weren't too bad: the Wright family, black people into crafting; and the Atwood family, white people into the great outdoors. He tends to refer to them as the crafty family and the outdoorsy family.

Mr. Avery parted from us with some last words of counsel.
"You are going into college life, boys, and you must take care of your bodies. Many a boy breaks down because he keeps his country appetite and loses his country exercise. You must balance study and brain-work by exercise and muscle-work, or you 'll be down with dyspepsia, and won't know what ails you. People have wondered where the seat of original sin is; I think it 's in the stomach. A man eats too much and neglects exercise, and the Devil has him all his own way, and the little imps, with their long black fingers, play on his nerves like a piano. Never overwork either body or mind, boys. All the work that a man can do that can be rested by one night's sleep is good for him, but fatigue that goes into the next day is always bad.
Never get discouraged at difficulties... When you get into a tight place, and everything goes against you till it seems as if you could n't hold on a minute longer, never give up then, for that 's just the place and time that the tide 'll turn.
Never trust to prayer without using every means in your power, and never use the means without trusting in prayer... and so, boys, go, and God bless you!" ~Harriet Beecher Stowe, "Last Days in Cloudland," Oldtown Folks, 1869 [Oh yes, how many of us succumbed to the freshman 15! —tg]

Back-to-School Capsule Wardrobe
A good minimum "back-to-school" capsule:
* 5 bottoms
* 5-10 tops
* at least one outer layer
* 5-10 pairs of socks
* 5-10 underwear
* 1-2 pairs of shoes
This gives you 5-10 outfits of nice new school clothes, enough for a school week without needing laundry, plus extras of the higher-use items. You can buy less if you already have plenty of clothes, but if you beat them to death or outgrow them often, make sure you have at least a week's worth of new ones. In most climates you will also want a mix of clothes for warmer and cooler weather, especially clothes that can be layered to account for changing temperatures.

Stone wash is one of several ways to soften denim.

Shiv chooses two fisherman's sweaters of aran cableknit, one faded denim, the other closer to navy.

Aran can refer to a weight of yarn, a type of wool, a breed of sheep (Galway or an island landrace), a pattern of knitting (see examples), or a style of sweater (aka a fisherman's sweater). That's because the most common use of "aran" is a cableknit sweater made from that weight of wool yarn from the Aran Islands. "Traditional Aran" sweaters are hand-knitted with undyed wool made from sheep raised on the Aran islands. The "aran style" modern ones are typically machine-knitted with dyed wool that is aran weight but from any sheep. What School Days sells is the "aran style" of machine-knitted dyed wool, an excellent sweater at an affordable price.

In Terramagne, "Traditional Aran" is a protected term, but "aran" may be used generically. Outside the islands, people sometimes use "aran style" to distinguish the difference. Unlike here, T-Aran Islands have a thriving industry of raising sheep and selling world-famous handcrafts made from them. While tourists are discouraged from wandering about ("Donna fash the sheep!"), there are several village farms, fibercraft shops, and other attractions that serve them so the islands can profit from their visits without causing problems. A small islet called Inish Deoraíoch (translated as Wandering Island, Foreign Island, or Stranger Island) is entirely dedicated to tourists and features a hostel with public or private rooms, a dining hall, and a gift shop; plus a model farm with tame, hand-raised sheep that tourists can pet and demonstrations of traditional activities such as shearing, spinning, and knitting. Most casual tourists go there; most who wish to explore the islands are fans of fibercraft and sheep in particular.

fash
/ fæʃ /
noun
1. worry; trouble; bother

deoraíoch
1, a. (gsm. ~, gsf. -íche, npl. ~a). Wandering, exiled.

Caoraich Glas is typically translated as "sea sheep," "gray sheep," "island sheep," or "landrace sheep." More precisely, it means "sea-colored sheep." This is a landrace of the Irish sea islands, occasionally found elsewhere, with dense weatherproof wool a little softer than Galway sheep. They come in cool colors, from pure white or off-white through all shades of gray to pure black; but not typically the warm range of ivory through shades of tan to coffee-black, unless they have been crossed with other breeds bearing those warmer colors. Inisheer, the smallest of the Aran Islands, still maintains the landrace with outcrossings to improve genetic diversity; while the other Aran Islands allow mixing only with other Caoraich Glas populations that are not outcrossed. Along with the Galway, this is one of the classic "Aran sheep" raised in the Aran islands and nearby areas. Galway sheep and Caoraich Glas are the two breeds permitted for Traditional Aran registered sheep, wool, yarn, and sweaters or other end products made from them.

Arthur chooses two layering sweaters of fine merino wool, one red and the other light gray.

Layering sweaters tend to be light to medium weight and slim to medium fit. They can be worn alone or under, between, or over other garments. Clothes specifically designed for layering are part of the lagenlook fashion but also essential for temperature control during travel, variable weather, and survival in cold weather.

Terramagne newspapers commonly include a "What You Can Do" section to help people deal with the difficult topics it raises or support positive ones. This can go at the end if short (e.g. "To support the charity working on this problem, go here.") while longer ones go in their own section toward the back. A cluster of articles on a common theme, like climate change, may share a longer list of recommendations in the back.

Sometimes a newspaper will have a whole big section of its website devoted to solutions for different problems, especially things that they write about often. People are taught that, when they feel helpless to do something about news that upsets them, they should visit their paper's website and search its "What You Can Do" section for ideas. The major newspapers in big cities sometimes spin this off into its own website, connected with links, and then they network with other newspapers' similar sites or sections, along with other resources like "charity watch" websites. Most local nonprofits will be networked with the newspaper to channel reader angst into local projects. This includes projects where a newspaper organizes its readers into a concerted effort, which is later followed up with a piece on, "Thanks to readers like you, we have achieved X toward this goal." So for instance, if people work themselves up over greenspace disparity, the newspaper might run a drive to fund pocket parks and native plantings in a disadvantaged neighborhood, then report on the amounts they managed to create.

Many fisheries are collapsing for a variety of reasons such as overfishing and climate change. Possible responses include ocean seeding, marine protected areas, and sustainable fishing. There are various ways to protect ocean health. Farmed catfish is a sustainable option for freshwater fish.

Beef is the worst food for the planet, especially regarding climate change. Just reducing or eliminating your use of cow products is a highly effective form of activism. And what if everyone did that? The cattle industries would largely vanish, taking their problems with them.

Poultry (including chicken, turkey, duck, and guinea) is among the most sustainable meat. Birds are much smaller than most other livestock and often omnivores who can forage.
