Here are the notes for "The Root of Healthy Touch."

Jessica Stark -- She has tinted skin, brown eyes, and short sleek brown hair. She is petite, with a round face and a slender body. Jessica was raped during a fraternity party while studying massage therapy at a community college. She responded by developing a specialization in boundary awareness and comfort contact that makes her popular with other trauma survivors. She spent her victim compensation payment on a bungee chip, a super-gizmotronic device that can transport her to a safe location if threatened. Jessica currently works for the Healthy Touch program at the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln.

"And there is the root of healthy touch: giving with respect, not with the concern for what you receive. Honoring boundaries without making yourself untouchable. Learning to love and care for the one body you’ve been given."
-- Healing with Our Hands

Jessica Stark first appeared in "Devil May Care."

Skin hunger and touch aversion are opposite ends of the spectrum regarding how much contact people want or need. Lack of skin contact tends to cause problems, but only healthy touch can prevent those; unhealthy touch may make matters worse. So it's essential to let people choose how much and what kind of touch they want.

The "sense of touch" is not one unified thing, but actually comes from many different types of nerve cells working together, each specialized to report a specific type of information. Thus it is possible for one type to misbehave while others continue to work as expected. For instance, different nerves report light pressure vs. deep pressure.

Some people find light touch uncomfortable (itchy, tingly, etc.) or painful (burning, shooting, etc.) yet they often find deep touch comfortable and soothing. This can happen with a variety of conditions such as fibromyalgia, migraines, autism, or sensory processing disorder -- all things where the nervous system malfunctions or just works differently. Another explanation is that the light touch system often warns of danger while the deep touch system more often relates to more things that are safe.

Massage pressure points have various uses.

Hand Acupressure / Acupuncture Points

Many people experience acupressure or deep tissue massage as uncomfortable or painful. This is because the pressure points involve nerve clusters. Conversely, some people are pressure junkies, because they experience those sensations as pleasant rather than painful (or both, the "hurts so good" effect). Shiv also likes certain types of controlled pain because he is a masochist, and this is one of them. Also, there just aren't many things that he experiences as deeply relaxing. So all that combines to make him a serious pressure junkie.
