These are the notes for "Sand Won't Save You This Time." Many of them are disturbing, like the poem.

The Sterbenfeld device and its effects are detailed in:

"We Must Bear Witness" 6-6-17
Summary: During WWII, Dr. Infanta travels throughout Europe, contributing all she can to various Resistance movements.

"Die Faltenlilien"
Summary: Back in WWII, Dr. Infanta and her family got caught in the blast of a Sterbenfeld device. It's one of the reasons she's a bit touched in the head.

The Candle Burns Not For Us
Directly follows "Die Faltenlilien"
Summary: Dr. Infanta is surprised when she finds another survivor of the Sterbenfeld blast.

Dr. Infanta's previous excursion to Israel appears in:

"The Day of Their Calamity"
Summary: When the perpetual strife between Israel and Palestine ratchets up the noncombatant body count, Dr. Infanta decides to provide a lesson in the gruesome and indelible consequences of their uncivilized behavior.

Inspiration from Janet Miles and Derek:
In a comment to my post on putting out fires last week, one commenter mentioned the utility of the good old sand bucket, and wondered if there was anything that would go on to set the sand on fire. Thanks to a note from reader Robert L., I can report that there is indeed such a reagent: chlorine trifluoride.
I have not encountered this fine substance myself, but reading up on its properties immediately gives it a spot on my “no way, no how” list. Let's put it this way: during World War II, the Germans were very interested in using it in self-igniting flamethrowers, but found it too nasty to work with. It is apparently about the most vigorous fluorinating agent known, and is much more difficult to handle than fluorine gas. That’s one of those statements you don’t get to hear very often, and it should be enough to make any sensible chemist turn around smartly and head down the hall in the other direction.
The compound also a stronger oxidizing agent than oxygen itself, which also puts it into rare territory. That means that it can potentially go on to “burn” things that you would normally consider already burnt to hell and gone, and a practical consequence of that is that it’ll start roaring reactions with things like bricks and asbestos tile. It’s been used in the semiconductor industry to clean oxides off of surfaces, at which activity it no doubt excels.

I’ll let the late John Clark describe the stuff, since he had first-hand experience in attempts to use it as rocket fuel. From his out-of-print classic Ignition! we have:
”It is, of course, extremely toxic, but that's the least of the problem. It is hypergolic with every known fuel, and so rapidly hypergolic that no ignition delay has ever been measured. It is also hypergolic with such things as cloth, wood, and test engineers, not to mention asbestos, sand, and water-with which it reacts explosively. It can be kept in some of the ordinary structural metals-steel, copper, aluminium, etc.-because of the formation of a thin film of insoluble metal fluoride which protects the bulk of the metal, just as the invisible coat of oxide on aluminium keeps it from burning up in the atmosphere. If, however, this coat is melted or scrubbed off, and has no chance to reform, the operator is confronted with the problem of coping with a metal-fluorine fire. For dealing with this situation, I have always recommended a good pair of running shoes.”

[From "Harry's Summer Vacation" by Wyrmraker]
“Knowing the compositions is important, don’t let anyone tell you different. But knowing the effect of the composition is better.” Harry’s eyes widened at that. “For example, chlorine trifluoride,” he began, sketching the very simple molecule on the chalkboard. “Simple, straight forward, and it hates existing. One of the most powerfully unstable oxidizers on the planet. With me so far?” Harry nodded, taking more notes. “This stuff will burn anything. Stone, concrete ashes, sand, asbestos, you name it, it’s on fire. Underwater? Easy. In vacuum? It carries it’s own oxygen. So far below the freezing point that it’s damn near at Absolute Zero? It’s on fire. I’m sure you can think of the many applications the conjuring a small quantity can serve.

Chlorine trifluoride is an interhalogen compound with the formula ClF3. This colorless, poisonous, corrosive, and extremely reactive gas condenses to a pale-greenish yellow liquid, the form in which it is most often sold (pressurized at room temperature).

Israeli Police Caught On Video Hosing ‘Skunk Spray’ on Palestinian Elementary Schools and Protesters
In Terramagne, this turns out to have unintended zetetic effects, with many Palestinian victims developing Pheromones, Stink Cloud, Smokescreen, Corrosive Body Fluids, etc.

The name of God used most often in the Hebrew Bible is the Tetragrammaton (YHWH). Jews traditionally do not pronounce it, and instead refer to God as HaShem, literally "the Name".

Israel is bordered by Lebanon to the north, Syria to the northeast, Jordan to the east, the Red Sea to the south, Egypt to the southwest, the Mediterranean Sea to the west, and the Palestinian territories – the West Bank along the east and the Gaza Strip along the southwest.

The 1949 Armistice Agreements saw Israel's borders established over most of the former Mandate territory, while the rest, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, were taken by Jordan and Egypt respectively. The 1967 Six-Day War saw Israel occupying the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula and the Syrian Golan Heights. It has since established and continues to expand settlements across the occupied territories, actions which are deemed illegal under international law, and annexed both East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights, which are largely unrecognized internationally.

The Arab–Israeli conflict involves political tension, military conflicts, and other disputes between various Arab countries and Israel, which escalated during the 20th century.

The Israeli–Palestinian conflict is an ongoing military and political dispute about land and self-determination within the territory of the former Mandatory Palestine. Key aspects of the conflict include the illegal Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, the status of Jerusalem, Israeli settlements, borders, security, water rights, the permit regime, Palestinian freedom of movement, and the Palestinian right of return.

Exotic metal fires (titanium and a host of others) are another case where sand won't save you. They'll cheerfully grab the oxygen from sand or concrete and keep burning.

Standard procedure in some places that machine titanium is that if it ignites, you turn off the machine, use a sturdy stick to knock it out of the machine and onto the floor.

Then you unbolt the machine from the floor slab and us the overhead crane to lift it off the slab and set it in the walkway between the machines.

Next you hook the crane up the slab with the burning titanium and lift it up and run it outside where it gets set asid to burn out on its own.

Finally they hook up a refurbished floor slab and run it in to replace the one the took out. And lift the machine back into place and rebolt it.

Then production resumes. So like 10 minutes of downtime.
