Advocates Are Working To Give Water Legal Rights

Threatened by development, five bodies of water are suing the State of Florida, making the unprecedented argument that nature has legal rights, too.

While slow to build, the movement toward nature rights is very promising.

In 2008, Indigenous Peoples led Ecuador to become the world’s first country to formally recognize the “Rights of Mother Earth,” a ruling that the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature (GARN) and others subsequently used successfully against a construction company that dumped rubble into a river. As a result, the government was forced to clean up the river. Any citizen in Ecuador can now go to court on behalf of nature.

Native peoples around the world have long understood that humans are part of the environment, and if it dies then we die too.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE real life witnesses vel ama!! the concept is from the goblin emperor by katherine addison, and I'm not quite sure how to translate it. I suppose one could call a witness a legal advocate? a witness vel ama witnesses for nature/entities without their own voice (as opposed to a witness for a person)

either way, it's a very cool book. content warning for fantasy racism and also child abuse. the above concept is unfortunately a pretty minor plot point, but it's definitely stuck with me
