THere was an old joke about a Pagan dying and going to the Summerland. Upon arrival, someone comes to show the new arrival around the place. They stroll past a group of Vikings passing around a horn of mead, and singing. "Yes, the Norse expected that." And a little further on they see a group of people performing an ancient Egyptian sacrifice ritual. "Yep, that's what they wanted." And a little further on they hear voices screaming in agony, coming from behind a massive iron gate. "THat's the Fundies. They demanded a place of eternal torture."
I have had that very conversation with another homeschooling mother. She kept insisting that my beliefs/lack of beliefs (she didn't consider Buddhism "valid" as a religion) meant that I, and my kids, were going to Hell. I insisted that she explain to me how I can be sent someplace that I do not believe in. A Deity of supposedly infinite power AND mercy wouldn't do that, would they?
She never came up with a complete sentence, let alone an answer.
