How Do You Stop Book Bans? Ban Them

A new Minnesota law prohibits book bans and explicitly gives librarians control of the selection process.

The law states in simple, unambiguous language, “a public library must not ban, remove or otherwise restrict access to a book or other material based solely on its viewpoint or the messages, ideas or opinions it conveys.” It puts decisions on book selection firmly in the hands of experts: librarians — who have made books their life’s work
.

Remember, if your city or state still allows book bans and is annoyed by nuisance complaints, just print off a few articles about places that have successfully outlawed book bans. Point out how much time and bother this would save them to enact similar laws in your locale. People are always busy and love finding ways to save time!

It doesn't even get mentioned here, thankfully.

We live too close to a place that was into burning books.

I forget where it was, and I can't find the article at this remove, but there was one county down south some place that had a rather zealous book banning law. One complaint and it was gone sort of deal. So protesters spammed the hell out of it, calling for bans on things like the bible and an autobiography of one of the politicians involved, and so on...

They ended up with a ban on book banning as well, simply because they were fed up of the annoyance.

How interesting! I've just heard that Dr. Seuss' McElligot's Pool earned the ban hammer in a few places because of its racial depictions. I adored that book as a child because of the deep dives it did, deeper into the pool, from one level to another, each level another wet world ...
