Question 12: What is something that you absolutely will not put up with, and why?


I have no patience with bigotry. It is stupid and destructive. It is literally delusional, because "race" does not exist; it's a thing humans made up.

I don't put up with censorship. It undermines knowledge. Without facts, people can't make good decisions.

I will absolutely not put up with being disrespected or trivialized. I usually try to demonstrate to the perpetrator that I am not a brainless girly-girl, by finding a way to show one of my "unladylike" skills like jump-starting a car with a dead battery, or conversing about abstruse and esoteric subjects like aviation and rocketry. My elderly aunts kept telling me that "boys don't like smart girls; they want a girl they can impress with their own smartness." Why would I be interested in a young man who wanted a compliant dimwit with no mind of her own. I certainly didn't want a good-looking but boring guy. I once had a brief relationship with a guy who owned a motorcycle (a tame little Yamaha, not a big hairy Harley). I broke up with him when he asked me to wear clothes that matched his bike's paint job.

Humans will make up distinctions between groups just to have somebody to pick on. "The people in the next cave are disgusting!. Every midsummer, they stiffen their hair with mud and go into the swamp and catch frogs and EAT THEM!" "Oh, those filthy barbarians! We have to kill them all and take their food."

I agree with you that censorship is a way of crippling the minds of other people. I have spent my lifetime trying to acquire as much information about the world as I can. I define myself as "someone who's curious about everything."

I also believe in IDIC, "Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations". I am pleasantly bedazzled by the amazing diversity I see in everything - it helps keep me from getting bored. So I may cheerfully watch a Bollywood movie while snacking on MesoAmerican popcorn while sitting on a sofa designed and manufactured in Denmark.

I agree with you; plus bigotry comes in a lot of forms, some of which don't have anything to do with race.

None of the other forms make any damn sense either. Women are not inherently lesser than men; there is nothing wrong with homosexuals; and so on.

I won't put up with disrespect. I've cut people out of my life for that, some I should have done sooner.

I won't put up with personal cruelty towards me or others and I'll speak up to interrupt it where I see it.

I can't get into politics or policy right now, but I can get on a variety of soapbox issues.
