... without a male in the tank.

Option 1 was my guess: parthenogenesis.

Option 2: one of the two male white spotted bamboo sharks in the tank. 0_o

I get that nature is wierd sometimes, but aren't sharks and rays too divergent to crossbreed?

I mean, I'm fairly sure that snakes and lizards are more closely related and they can't crossbreed.

They are more closely related than I would have though...I still doubt they'd be cross-viable though. It sounds like the rays evolves a very long time ago, and even if they look roughly the same, I am sure genetic drift would build up.

Or in other words, I would be very dubious about the possibility of shark-ray hybrids and would want good evidence before accepting one as scientifically valid.

Y'know, like that dog-fox hybrid that was in the news awhile ago - I was sure they were impossible, but genetic testing is good evidence, so my stance on them has revised from 'impossible!' to 'very rare.'
