Here are the character notes for "Determine Where You Start."

Quain Macallan -- He has fair skin, blue eyes, and wavy blond hair cut short. A football injury left him paralyzed with partial use of his arms. His heritage is American; he speaks English. He is 20 years old in 2015.
Quain grew up in Ohio. During 7th grade, he belonged to the RoboDerby club. His family moved the following summer. The next junior high didn't have any robotics club, but did have a junior football team. Quain joined that, and by high school his quarterback skills were so clear that the adults encouraged him to plan for a career in sports.
Quain went to college on a football scholarship. He was working toward a Bachelor of Science in Sport Industry at the Ohio State University-Columbus. In his junior year, a tackling pileup led to serious and career-ending injuries. After that, a meeting with Hamrish Alden from Another Door Opens tipped him to the idea of joining NASA for their robotic exploration branch. Hamrish offered to get a new scholarship for Quain, so he could work on a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering with a focus on robotics.

Another Door Opens is a Terramagne-American program for people with acquired disabilities. It offers free college or other education in professions convenient for blind, deaf, paralyzed, or otherwise disabled people. For the most physically limited, it offers a wide array of highly theoretical fields such as computer programming, ethics, linguistics, philosophy, and quantum mechanics that rely little on the body. For those with brain injuries or mental disabilities, it presents more physical options such as arts and crafts, organic gardening, and pet care. Another Door Opens also provides grants to makerspaces, business incubators, and other organizations if they uphold inclusive goals; the payouts go higher for those who include more different types of disabled consultants and/or members. By supporting people in the pursuit of a new career, this program provides emotional engagement, achievement, and independence at a time when survivors often feel hopeless.
