This poem came out of today's fishbowl. It was inspired and sponsored by [personal profile] rix_scaedu. It also fills the "Dream" square in my 9-1-23 card for the Story Sparks Bingo fest.

"A Girl with a Dream"
-- a limerick

There once was a girl with a dream
And also a plan, it would seem:
She studied all day
What books came her way
And left men behind in her steam.

Notes:

Rules of the Limerick Form
Typically, the first two lines rhyme with each other, the third and fourth rhyme together, and the fifth line either repeats the first line or rhymes with it. The limerick's anapestic rhythm is created by an accentual pattern that contains many sets of double weakly-stressed syllables.

I know a limerick (a polite one).

There once was a scientist quite bright,
who discovered how to travel faster than light.
He set out one day,
in a relative way.
and returned the previous night!

I know a lot of limericks, most of them Victorian and solidly improper.

"A clever young person named Keene,
Invented a *boinking* machine;
Both concave and convex
So it fit either sex -
With attachments for those in between."
