Yup, pretty bad news there - and thanks for the link, via TheWayne, to a favorite person, Jon Carroll, whose column I read faithfully for some years, and whose Unitarian Jihad piece rocked. *guffaws at the mere title*

I had, perhaps fortunately, never heard of Plex, but I'm adding it to my list of things that shouldn't be used, except maybe behind multiple layers of anonymity protection.(And better not to use them at al, lest that use benefit them in some way.)

Not, of course, that this is any worse than e.g. Google, which also features on-by-default sharing. (They put my personal bookmarks on my work computer, and internal bookmarks (from my paranoid work work place) onto my personal computer, where they were available for other software to upload to their cloud.) They also feature random announced changes that reset a subset of your choices back to the default.

The big difference is that this one is more obviously egregious. Some new-hire developer at Google could have been dumb enough not to realize that their misfeature could e.g. put porn bookmarks put on one's work computer, resulting in getting a person fired, with Google only responsible for inadequate supervision.

Plex has less in the way of plausible deniability.
