Three Weeks for Dreamwidth runs April 25-May 15. This year, I'll be posting about birds in honor of birdfeeding. Today's topic is Other Wildlife Feeders.





There are far more than just birdfeeders. Many other types of wildlife will come to a feeder too. Some of these creatures, like insects, will also attract more birds to your yard. Others just boost the diversity, which makes a better mini-ecosystem in general.

Insect feeders come in various styles. Most of the ones marketed are for butterflies, but the same approach -- offering fruit and nectar -- will attract many others as well. A more obscure offering is a butterfly puddler for species that drink from damp sand or soil. Other insects will drink from these too. There are also bee feeders, but the best way to feed bees is with flowers. However, if spring weather is terrible and the flowers die, a bee feeder can keep more bees alive until new flowers bloom. Including basking stones near your insect fixtures to help them warm up; basalt or other black rocks work well.

Squirrel feeders come in a great many styles. They break down into several categories: boxes and trays for peanuts or mixed wildlife chow, puzzles, spikes to hold corncobs, and kinetic "whirl-a-squirrel" spinners that offer both food and play. The box / tray style will feed the most different types of wildlife besides tree squirrels, such as chipmunks or raccoons, especially ground feeders which also attract birds such as mourning doves or quail. For some feeders, like jar feeders, you may need to adjust the size for your preferred critter(s). If you love squirrels, you can even build a whole obstacle course for them to play on, with a feeder at the far end or with different feeders along the way. Note that some flying squirrels are declining and thus need all the help they can get.
