Three Weeks for Dreamwidth runs April 25-May 15. This year, I'll be posting about birds in honor of [community profile] birdfeeding. Today's topic is Birdbaths.

Three Weeks for Dreamwidth 2022

Birds and other wildlife need water. Birdbaths offer one way to provide this. They come in a wide range of styles. Accessories include hangers, heaters, and fountains. Some birdbaths are gorgeous works of art, but birds tend to prefer more prosaic versions. You can even find some of natural stone. Crafty folks may prefer to make their own. Note the birds don't always like what they "should" like. If you offer a recommended style and they ignore it, try something else. Mine ignored all the raised, shallow offerings in favor of a deep dog dish type of bowl on the ground.

A pedestal birdbath has a stem or pillar of some sort. This can be one piece or two pieces with the bowl resting on a tall base. A variation is the staked birdbath, which is actually stuck into the ground. These are popular with fancy glass or metal bowls.

Mounted birdbaths come in several styles. These are designed to attach to some sort of structure. That can be a deck rail, a wall, or even a window. They all consist of a bowl with some kind of mounting hardware. In cold climates that require electric heating in winter to keep the water from freezing, this option is ideal because it's on or near the house, and many mounted models come with their own heating element.

Hanging birdbaths are suspended with chains or ropes from a hanger. They are often part of a wildlife feeding station that has multiple arms. You can also hang them right in front of a window. These are among the cheapest options. However, some birds don't like the swinging action.

Ground birdbaths are containers that sit right on the ground. Although more vulnerable to predators, this position is the most natural and many birds prefer it. Bowls may be decorative or natural in design. Some have a low stand to keep them from rocking.

Accessories can make a birdbath more appealing to wildlife. Popular choices include misters, drippers, water wigglers, and fountains. Heaters prevent water from freezing in winter. You can also find cleaning supplies, mosquito dunks, and other maintenance equipment.
