Oh right! That sort... you can poke around in the settings to prevent that, but I wouldn't recommend it. Partly because you can brick things that way, and partly because it doesn't work reliably, as in prevent the pop-up notifications. Microsoft don't like people messing with their 'Windows Experience' and updates tend to undo any modifications you've made to bits of the systems architecture.
Of course, you could poke around on certain web sites and find the necessary keys to register the software...
