An "aperiodic monotile," or einstein, is a shape that tiles an infinite flat surface in a nonrepeating pattern.

:D I am fascinated by nonrepeating tiles, like Penrose tiles, so this is a fascinating addition.

Also, this is a splendid example of someone with an intuitive knack for math, in the geometrical branch -- someone who just likes fooling with shapes or puzzles, and has a sense for how things fit. You see it with high visual-spatial intelligence sometimes. The logical side gets all the attention, but not all math mavens are into that.

Dr. Senechal agreed. “It’s sitting right in the hexagons,” she said. “How many people are going to be kicking themselves around the world wondering, why didn’t I see that?”

That kind of phrasing usually indicates a supergizmo. There's a rare small set of the things that are actually quite simple and obvious but only in retrospective. Discovering them is really hard. The Tesla fluid valve is the classic example.

Incredibly, Mr. Smith later found a second einstein. He called it “the turtle” — a polykite made of not eight kites but 10. It was “uncanny,” Dr. Kaplan said. He recalled feeling panicked; he was already “neck deep in the hat.”

And that's the kind of thing that reveals a supergizmologist. They just discover things by fooling around, repeatedly.

But just like nobody else saw the einstein in the hex grid, people in this world can look right at superpowers and just ... not see them.

Except some of us can, and they're really cool. :D

Mr. Smith was amazed to see the research paper come together. “I was no help, to be honest.” He appreciated the illustrations, he said: “I’m more of a pictures person.”

See above re: visual-spatial intelligence. Possibly even visual-native. Notice that the best material came from combining the two types of math maven, the intuitive-visual and the logical-numeric. The logical one couldn't see the relevant shape without having it pointed out; the intuitive one couldn't write the proof. But together they can give us both, which is awesome. This, this is why we need diversity.
