Open Pollinated Land-race Watermelon
Summary
In the 2011 growing season I started a genetically diverse open pollinated land-race of watermelon that is being selectively adapted to thrive on my farm with it's cold nights, hot arid days, bright high-altitude sunlight, and short growing season. Before the start of the growing season seeds were shared among 2 growers in a similarly short-season cold climate, and one grower in a warmer climate.

Watermelon is a crop well adapted to light, sandy soil and long hot summers although as the name suggests it needs plenty of water. It is not well suited to the short season of a high mountain garden, but can be coaxed to adapt somewhat. The author shares an extensive list of short-season cultivars used in the mass planting toward developing a landrace.
Note that watermelon is often bred to be "seedless." If you want to make a landrace, then you need to choose seeded varieties so that you can save the seed. Those seedless hybrids are useless for this. Read carefully.
