Overview

Wednesday is a new television series belonging to The Addams Family canon. This series premiered on November 16, 2022, subsequently released on Netflix on November 23. Season 1 consists of eight episodes, each about 45 minutes long. As of January 2023, it has been renewed for a second season. The Addams Family Wiki has references for this series as well as other iterations of the canon.

This show focuses on Wednesday Addams as a teenager. After bullies assault her brother Pugsley, she drops piranhas into the swimming pool, and subsequently gets expelled from school. Her parents send her to Nevermore Academy, a private school for unusual students which they attended in their youth, located in Jericho, Vermont. Wednesday's personality makes it challenging for her to deal with the school's unique culture. Then violent events shake it up even more.

The overall mood is more Gothic fantasy than horror. The level of graphic violence and gore is quite high, so not to everyone's taste. However, the level of elegance is also very high, with picturesque scenery and splendid costumes. Rare for modern media, and showing its historic roots, the magic is freeform without focusing too much on rules. There are clusters of characters whose abilities follow a relatively consistent pattern (e.g. werewolves, sirens) but also those whose nature utterly defies logic, like Thing. See the Gothic Archive and Gothic Glossary for more about this genre and its features.

The plot dynamics include Gothic motifs about secrets, mystical hazards, family tensions, colonialism, old vendettas, and death. The story arc fits comfortably into the eight episodes, with a nice balance of episodic and seasonal storylines. It's complicated enough to maintain interest, but not so overdeveloped as to feel cramped for space. The ambiguity and mystery work well with the mood.
