Seed Shopping
Jan. 24th, 2023 04:16 pmI forgot to post this yesterday. My order from American Meadows arrived! :D This is a great company that offers many regional and thematic wildflower mixes as well as single-species packets. Another perk: their 1/4 pound mixes come in heavy cotton bags that can be used to store other things once empty.
It occurred to me to mark the shipping envelope and the individual packages with "2023" just in case I need to distinguish anything from remnants of last year's seeds. I'm sure I used up all the American Meadows stuff, but hopefully this will help me remember to mall all the new ones coming in.
Monarch Butterfly Wildflower Seed Mix
The Monarch Butterfly Wildflower Mix is an easy-to-grow compilation of 27 wildflowers that will thrive in any sunny location throughout the US. Including 4 different types of Milkweed to ensure Monarchs have plenty of host plants to lay their eggs on, this mix also contains a variety of nectar-rich wildflowers for energizing monarch populations before they migrate. A blend of annuals and perennials provide early and lasting color. This is your go-to mixture for creating an official Monarch Waystation or simply helping out the local pollinators in your area.
(I tried this last year and just loved it. Although optimized for monarchs, it also serves bees and birds.)

Date: 2023-01-24 11:39 pm (UTC)Ooh, this reminds me that last year I planted a whole load of wildflower bulbs down the side of my house and it is nearing the time that they might show up if they're going to do so at all. I can't wait to see what turns up :)
Yay!
Date: 2023-01-25 12:23 am (UTC)I'm gambling on a couple of wild hyacinth bulbs this year, no idea how that will turn out since they have to be planted in late summer. Last year I planted some wild leeks, so I'll see if they come up.
I've had good luck with some wildflowers though. The yellow bellflowers and bluebells keep coming back, and the mayapples are spreading. I have some solomon's seal. The streetside yard has a few trilliums.

Date: 2023-01-25 04:43 pm (UTC)Thank you! There are a few hopeful looking sprouts in the part of the garden that gets most sun, but I'll have to wait until they flower to be able to tell what they are.
I should think that the wild hyacinths will be okay for you - they're pretty tough so I'm sure they'll adapt. Wild leeks are very exciting! And all those wildflowers sound lovely :)

Date: 2023-01-25 02:08 am (UTC)Edible flowers cost an arm and a leg if you buy them at a farmer's market. But many are easy to grow. I made a flower salad once. 1 bag of spring mix greens, about a cup of assorted herbs from my yard, about a cup of flowers (mostly marigolds with some pinks, pansies, a couple of nasturtiums, and separate chive flowers for the garlic lovers), and a few chunky things like cucumbers. It was a huge hit. I thought the flowers would just disappear into the greens but they really didn't, they popped right out.
