sunshine_challenge and Prompt 7: Sunshine Jasper. It also fills the "ear" square in my 7-1-22 card for the Body Parts Bingo fest. This poem belongs to the series Arts and Crafts America.
"Attempt the Impossible"
[1990]
Yellow banded
with black and gray,
the stone is known
as sunshine jasper
or bumblebee jasper.
It is not, in fact, jasper at all
but rather a type of agate.
Found in an Indonesian volcano,
it has never been discovered
in any other location.
It finds its way into
the hands of those
who need it most --
rocket scientists
aiming for new worlds,
writers who want to make
money from poetry,
musical archaeologists
who hope to recreate
lost tunes by ear,
actresses who are
more talented
than beautiful --
the people who are
attempting the impossible.
When they have done it,
they rub the stone
one last time in
fond farewell
and then leave it
in some public place
for the next adventurer.
