sunshine_challenge and Prompt 6: Amethyst. It also fills the "bitter" square in my 7-1-22 card for the Body Parts Bingo fest. It belongs to the series Arts and Crafts America.
"Bitter as Hops"
[July 2022]
Addiction is a sickness
that might remit but
never really heals.
For those stricken
with it, the chance
of relapse is always
a credible threat.
They get by as best
they can, clinging to
each other for support.
Memory is bitter as hops,
bottled and aged as wine,
impossible to forget.
Beside the door of
their meeting-house
stands a chunk of
amethyst, rough-cut
from the stone around it,
polished not by any sand
but by their desperate fingers.
The stories say that amethyst can
purify the body and cure disease.
Even the ones who don't believe ... hope.
