This year in Three Weeks for Dreamwidth, I've decided to feature hippies. Today introduces hippie and Bohemian crafts.
Hippie / Bohemian Crafts
Hippies and Bohemians unite through creativity. Hippies have used arts and crafts as a type of activism. Hippie women in particular revived almost-lost techniques for making things. Protests included anti-capitalism as well as pacifism, which many hippies practiced by making their own things instead of buying from stores. Bohemians have made art for self-expression. The heart of Bohemian crafts is about making what you need from whatever you happen to have. It's a lifestyle, not just a fashion style.
Arts and crafts from the 1960s-1970s tended toward the rustic, whimsical, or psychedelic. Popular examples included tie-dye, sewing, embroidery, knitting, crochet, and macramé. Many hippies painted their car or their van with complex designs. Contemporary Bohemian crafts include many of the same things, but often include interesting new materials. Holographic craft supplies are an exciting addition. It's much easier to find blacklight or glow-in-the-dark items now. Some natural fibers, like hemp and bamboo, are more readily available as fabric bolts or blank garments.
Hippies and Bohemians like freestyle crafts. They can make something cool out of junk or garbage. They can upcycle just about anything. The key to making this work is keeping a selection of craft supplies that you can add to found items. Here's an example in the crystal window ornament that I made: I bought the crystals, I already had the thread, and I found the weathered branch in my yard. This is a classic example of freestyle craft.
