I just grew up making stuff, often quite random things. I'd see some sort of craft supply and get an idea for it, or a thing at a street fair that I could make my own. It might not be as fancy as the storebought version, but it's fun to make and gets the job done.
If you see anything you want to make, go for it. One reason I like to post pictures of crafts is so people can do that if they want to.
