Transportation Diversity

This post talks about transportation diversity. That is, the more options you have, the more resilience you have, making it harder for one problem to shut down access. If a bridge goes out, you can use the ones on either side of it, just a little farther away. If the subway breaks down, you can uses buses. And so on.
Our local bike shop is very astute about this. Whenever there's a spike, their sign reads, "Wow, gas is expensive!"
To make your town more resilient, check for fault tolerance and diversity in the transportation system. Does it support a combination of walking, biking, driving? Do you have a bus, train, subway, and/or other mass-transit system? Especially, does the network support connecting different modes of travel? A bus station is much more useful if it has car parking, bike parking, and maybe if it's near a campus also racks for skateboards or scooters. A bikeshare is another excellent method of connection because you can walk, borrow a bike, rack it and catch a bus. Also, the more your community can rely on green options -- walking, biking, neighborhood electric vehicle pools, etc. -- the better it is for climate safety. We won't have affordable fossil fuels forever, and besides, they run up the local heat sink.
Watch for local initiatives relating to transportation. It is to everyone's benefit that the total connectivity be high and diverse, to minimize interruptions.
