Myrtle is the wife of Lalam, younger sister of Mentha, mother of Clary, aunt of Salvia and Rosamunda. Several older children from her first marriage left Vermont with their father when Myrtle was pregnant with Clary. Myrtle subsequently married Lalam Tucker. Currently she works at Athelas Herbarium in Rutledge, Vermont. She is the assistant manager with a specialization in herbal nutrition.

Ghada and Kaidon were trying to escape Syria with their son Javen, the youngest, when they were stopped at a checkpoint. Kaidon and Javen were beaten and taken away by guards; Ghada was beaten and left unconscious by the road. She later made her way to a refugee camp alone, where she tried to search for them, to no avail. Eventually she came to Rutledge, Vermont. Separated from her family, Ghada finds it difficult to think of anything else. She believes they are still alive and hopes to find them someday. She prefers modest women's wear in black, gray, or pink occasionally touched with blue or yellow.

As a torture survivor, he suffers from depersonalization and derealization. He has a hard time feeling his body and the world around him, easily getting lost in traumatic memories.
