Poem: "Boxing Day"

ysabetwordsmithThis poem came out of the January 4, 2022 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from kelkyag. It also fills the "mercy" square in my 12-23-21 card for the Story Sparks Fest. This poem has been sponsored by janetmiles. It belongs to the series Monster House.
"Boxing Day"
The day after Christmas,
we go over the toys together.
We count up the new toys and
decide which ones to keep --
anything that doesn't appeal
can be given to someone else.
Then we box up the old things
that nobody plays with anymore
and take them to a charity shop.
The monsters in-the-closet and
under-the-bed are especially handy
at gathering up whatever has fallen into
dustspace so it can be passed along.
The rule is: one toy in, one toy out.
It keeps the house from getting
too cluttered, and it reminds us
to appreciate what we have and
show mercy to those with less.
Also it discourages dust mice
from overrunning the whole place.

Notes:
Boxing Day is the day after Christmas, a traditional time for giving to charities. "One toy in, one toy out" is a good rule for preventing overload.
Dustspace -- the areas behind or under furniture, the closet floor, and so forth where lost or abandoned objects gather; a semi-detatched dimensional zone.
