How can someone believe they're "good enough", when there's NO SUCH THING as "good enough". Something has to be exceptional, phenomenal, paradigm-changing, in order to be "good enough" - getting an olympic gold medal is unimportant if you don't beat the world speed record for the course.
And if there's someone who's better than you, you can't possibly be good enough. You have to be better than anybody else has ever been. You have to be the GOAT, or there's no point in bothering. There's only one Fastest Gun In The West. And someday someone is going to do it better than you just did, which would make you no longer the best there ever was.
So you turn into the melancholy old person sitting in the corner drinking - oh, him? He was once the hottest new pop star in the world. Now he's ruined his voice and gained weight, and nobody remembers his name any more.
