These are the notes for "The Endless Reweaving of a Social Fabric."

Dolores Ghasemi -- She has tinted skin, gray eyes, and long straight brown hair with lighter streaks on the left. The whole left side of her body and some of the center has terrible scars from the Grunge and falling debris. Her heritage is Hispanic and Middle Eastern. She speaks Before English and Before Spanish. She was 18 at the End and is 33 in 15 A.E. Dolores is a talented scrounge, fearlessly scavenging far-flung places. She prefers loose clothes in dark colors, accented with deep jewel tones when she can find them. She usually wears a shawl or scarf to hide the scars on her face. She also does some hand sewing, because she can't always find comfortable clothes. Dolores drives an old blue pickup truck with a shell over the back, for storing loot and sleeping. Each of the windows in the shell has been replaced with a different color of glass.

"Hospitality is always an act that benefits the host even more than the guest. The concept of hospitality arose in ancient times when the reciprocity was easier to see: in nomadic cultures, the food and shelter one gave to a stranger yesterday is the food and shelter one hopes to receive from a stranger tomorrow. By offering hospitality, one participates in the endless reweaving of a social fabric on which all can depend-thus the gift of sustenance for the guest becomes a gift of hope for the host."
-- Parker J. Palmer

Following the Grunge, the calendar shifted. B.E. means Before the End and A.E. means After the End. As new territories formed from the remnants of the old nations, people began to favor the older indigenous "moon" names rather than "month" names, but often made a jumble of terms borrowed from several local tribes. (Tribal people have a much stronger presence in the Aftermath, since nobody bothered to bomb them. They lost members to the military, but had few casualties on the reservations.) Most people stopped tracking days of the week, and instead would simply say "half-moon" (about two weeks) or "quarter-moon" (about one week) for periods of time less than a moon (or month). After all, few people had calendars anymore -- and some who tried to keep time without any got out of sync with each other -- but everyone could see the Moon. So far, they're sticking with the 12-month count rather than a 13-moon count, but that may well shift.

See the maps, animals, and Grunge notes after "Laundry, Liturgy, and Women's Work."

This map shows Washington roads and cities. Rainshadow Road is the part of former Interstate 90 from the eastern border through the Columbia Basin (the rainshadow) to the Cascade Mountains. Lazarus Lake is a commune outside the ruins of former Moses Lake, so named because for some unknown reason Grunge victims who washed in its water had a higher survival rate. Now it has a reputation for healing water.

The interior of the trading barn at Lazarus Lake, Lincoln, Cadia is mostly open space with tables and shelves to hold different things. Hand tools hang on the wall. Food goes on the shelves. This old bookcase holds candles. This counter has soap and other body products. A rack holds clothes.

Polly -- an After term for polyester in particular, but also any other synthetic fabric in general. It is unpopular for most purposes because it doesn't last as long as natural fabrics like cotton or wool. However, it can still be used for some things like curtains or room dividers.

Polyester has multiple drawbacks compared to sustainable natural fabrics.

This salvaged fabric has lots of pinks and blues along with some other colors.

These shawl pins come from the trading barn. You can make shawl pins from wire. Watch a video of this craft.

Aight -- alright.

Stinkey -- someone who comes into a commune or trading post for entertainment and often trouble. From "stinker."

Muckamuck -- a person important for their resources and generosity. This isn't necessarily the leader or elder -- it can be a supply manager, crafter, or hunter -- but they always get complete respect. Also the muckamuck in a group usually gets the deciding vote on whether to accept a new member, based on their belief about the newcomer's ability to give more than they take.

Prior to the End, the Sovereign Military Order of Malta had sent humanitarian aid to the state of Washington, based in Moses Lake. In the Aftermath, they established two related entities: an armey called the Knights Hospitaller and the House of St. John in the commune of Lazarus Lake. The Knights Hospitaller roam the surrounding area providing protection and first aid. The House of St. John is a combination monastery-hospital-inn.

Sacred hospitality is making a much stronger return in the new cultures. Within a few years After, gathering spots begin to emerge from the ruins of civilization. Some places are reinventing the monastary-hospital-inn. Clergy in cities were hit because they kept trying to help people, but on average they tend to be lower on sex hormones and higher on age, not as many in the target range. Those outside in monasteries, missionary work, etc. fared much better. I've already spotted one nun running a commune, and it doesn't seem rare: "Mother" and "Father" as titles for elders are popular, and that's likely where it came from.

Bushed -- uncivilized, as said of a person who has stayed in the wilderness ("bush") so long they have forgotten how to get along with other people. It has largely lost the earlier meaning of "tired."

A capsule wardrobe makes it easy to mix and match garments for different looks from a limited supply. This is popular in home sewing and vintage wear.

Simplicity Pattern 4808 -- Jacket, long-sleeved blouse, sleeveless blouse, pencil skirt, A-line skirt, dress, shorts, pants. The length of sleeves, skirts, dress, and shorts/pants could be modified as desired. This pattern shows plain blue, plain white, vertical blue stripes, and horizontal blue stripes. However, it would've made more sense to put the vertical blue stripes on the dress, which is worn alone, because currently the striped shorts and striped top don't match.

Simplicity 4093 -- Jacket, tank top, skirt, pants, dress. The skirt and pants could be modified in length. Ideally, use the same pattern on garments that can be worn together. A different pattern on dresses is fine.

Simplicity 5792 -- Jacket, vest, maxiskirt and midiskirt, and pants. The skirt pattern could be cut at any length, and the pants could likewise be shortened to capris or shorts.

Another option is to use a pattern with multiple variations of the same garment. If you make several in different colors or prints, they will look related but not identical.

Silk wrap skirts can be worn in various ways. They work with silk, polyester, or any other light filmy fabric.

"Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 for I was hungry, and ye gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me in; 36 naked, and ye clothed me; I was sick, and ye visited me; I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee hungry, and fed thee? or athirst, and gave thee drink? 38 And when saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39 And when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it unto one of these my brethren, even these least, ye did it unto me."
-- The Bible, Matthew 25:35-40
