Poem: "Applewood Crafts"

This is the freebie for the November 2021
crowdfunding Creative Jam. It was inspired by a prompt from
fuzzyred. It also fills the "victim" square in my 11-1-21 card for the NCIS Bingo fest.
"Applewood Crafts"
The orchard was the victim
of a strong autumn storm,
knocking down branches
and even a few whole trees.
The day after, the farmers
went out the clean up the mess,
trimming ragged ends where
the branches had broken off.
Everyone else followed along
to pick up whatever was left.
They gathered twigs for tinder
and small branches to be chipped
for use in the smokehouse later.
Some were sawn into small pieces
and sanded smooth as blocks
for the children to play with.
Larger branches were cut
in chunks for the woodcarvers
to make into platters and bowls.
The trunks of the fallen trees
went to the furniture makers
who would turn them into
beds and dressers and
tall elegant coatracks.
Nothing was wasted.
The orchard might have
fallen victim to the storm,
but applewood crafts
held their own worth.
