These are the setting notes for "Life-Bonding Loyalty" about Ned's house.

Ned Sterling and his family live just north of Capitol Beach Lake in Lake Bottoms, Lincoln, Nebraska.

Ned's house has two stories plus a basement. A long view of the front shows the 2-car garage with its rooftop patio and three sets of steps leading up to the house.

The rooftop patio is fenced and strung with lights. It includes planters of flowers, adult patio furniture, large stationary coolers, and a grill in the outdoor cooking area. Green outdoor carpet marks the play area, which includes a miniature pavilion, children's table and chairs, a sensory table, and two different sizes of playground equipment. This large area is valuable because it's almost the only flat spot -- most of the yard is steeply sloped and terraced. So the patio playspace creates a completely different opportunity to explore, contrasting between natural and artificial environments.

Toward the left lies a bed of native wildflowers. This is a closeup of the front showing two sets of steps and a little of the rooftop patio fence.

The door of the glass sunroom lets out into the back yard where brick terraces hold a variety of edible and wildlife plants including berry bushes and trees. In the background, a neighbor's playground equipment is visible; Laurie's best friend Jilly lives there.

The back yard has a large patio of wood and brick, a firepit with grill, terraces, and a wooden gazebo.

The fence around the rooftop patio has its gate open. To the left is a mulberry tree. Behind the fence are flowers and windowboxes on the house.

Near the house, this vacant lot has oak trees. In the background is a business that sells tennis equipment and rents tennis courts.

The basement has a large mudroom with a laundry corner.

The basement bathroom includes a sink, toilet, and shower.

The kitchenette is colorful chaos but has a gorgeous glass door. It includes a sink, minifridge, and microwave oven along with appliances like a coffeepot, a hotplate, a popcorn maker, a crockpot, and a sandwich grill.

The guest bedroom is tiny, just big enough for a full-size bed and a dresser.

The media room includes a couch, a viewscreen, and other electronic equipment.

The music room has an upright piano, a couch, and a built-in bookcase with a concealed door to the Cave of Games which has hundreds of tabletop games.

The playroom has a toy kitchen and various toys on shelves, a nature nook, and a reading corner.

The exercise room is protected by glass doors. Inside it has a stationary bicycle, a treadmill, a jumping bench, a weight frame, and free weights.

The front door opens into a foyer and the living room, with the stairs just beyond that. The foyer has a bench and a coatrack made of horseshoes. The coatrack is a souvenir from a vacation after PJ's birth.

The living room has a fireplace framed in vivid turquoise tile. Between the fireplace and the mantel is a row of contrast tile. Above that, a Northwest Coast painting of an orca commemorates Ned's honeymoon. A couch and chairs create a conversation cluster. There is no television in the living room. An archway with French doors leads to the sun porch. The living room looks into the dining room.

The door to the left of the stairs leads to the common bathroom, between the stairs and the kitchen. It has a toilet, a sink, and a walk-in shower. It uses the same turquoise tile as the fireplace.

Above the couch hangs a watercolor of the Great Lakes and a square of handmade lace, souvenirs from a vacation there after Laurie's birth.

The sun porch spans the front of the house, looking out over the rooftop patio. It includes a hide-a-bed couch and a children's play table. They also have accessories for the play table including the Eco Town and the Train Set. Across the from the couch is a built-in bookcase holding books, games, and toys. The end with the couch wraps around part of the house, holding a huge beanbag.

The dining room looks into the sunroom in the back and the kitchen to the side. The table is a single slab of polished wood, with 6 chairs around it. The chandelier has Art Deco detailing on the shades. Snowshoes hang on the wall, souvenirs from a vacation after Ellie's birth. From the dining room, you can see into the living room and the sun porch.

The kitchen includes a microwave oven, dishwasher, sink, and roll-under counter space. It still has the original tin ceiling. The stove is opposite the roll-under counter, on the left side from the sink. A jumbo refrigerator-freezer stands opposite the sink. The left doorway leads to the hall that has the bathroom. The right doorway leads to the dining room, through which you can glimpse the living room.

The glass sun room spans the back of the house. It includes a chair, a couch, and an old steamer trunk used as a coffee table and storage space. The couch reassembles to make a bed. The door lets out into the back yard.

French doors at the top of the stairs assist with sound control between the upper and lower floors.

The master bedroom is above the living room, as shown by the chimney. It includes a king-size bed, an open closet, and a chair in the reading corner. The master bathroom has a corner sink, a built-in bathtub with fixed showerhead, and a toilet with a handheld sprayer. The tile is the same turquoise as the fireplace downstairs.

The nursery includes a dresser, a changing table, a crib for PJ, and a floor mattress for either of the girls to nap on. This room is above the dining room.

Laurie and Ellie share this bedroom above the kitchen. It includes two floor beds with house frames, although they haven't bothered to put privacy curtains on the beds. They also have boxes for toys, shelves for books, and several pieces of floor furniture. Each girl has her own dresser on the wall opposite her bed.

The common bathroom is done in white, green, and blue with a nautical theme. Blue waves are tiled into the white floor. It has a pedestal sink, a toilet, storage cabinets, and a built-in bathtub with a handheld showerhead.

The office has chairs, storage chests, a computer desk, and other office equipment. This room is above the foyer.
