This poem came out of the September 7, 2021 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired and sponsored by Shirley Barrette. It also fills the "Confidence / Insecurities" square in my 9-1-21 card for the Platonic Love Fest Bingo.
"A Vicious Circle of Influence"
Leaders and followers:
you can't have one without
the other, because each is
created by its opposite.
They egg each other on,
sometimes for the better,
more often for the worse.
It's a vicious circle of influence.
People often choose leaders
who are older than themselves,
believing -- rightly or wrongly --
that older means wiser.
They create an interplay
of confidence and insecurities,
looking to each other for what
they should find in themselves.
They have forgotten how
to sit down together and listen
for the still small voice of truth.
