The Poetry Fishbowl is now CLOSED. Thank you for your time and attention. Please keep an eye on this space as I am still writing.

Starting now, the Poetry Fishbowl is open! Today's theme is "anything goes." I will be checking this page periodically throughout the day. When people make suggestions, I'll pick some and weave them together into a poem ... and then another ... and so on. I'm hoping to get a lot of ideas and a lot of poems.

Stuck for ideas? You can find prompts by ...
* browsing planned poems for Aquariana and the Maldives, The Big One, Broken Angels, Calliope and Vagary, Officer Pink and Turq, Pips and Joshua, or Shiv.
* browsing my Serial Poetry page for favorite threads or characters.
* browsing my QUILTBAG list, Romantic Orientations in My Characters, Sexual Orientations in My Characters, Gender Identities in My Characters, or My Characters with Disabilities for favorites.
* naming a poetic form you'd like to see written.
* picking a prompt from my current bingo cards: Hot Summer Writes Bingo Card 8-1-21, August Intimacies: Time Bingo Card 8-2-21.
* picking some from the Bingo Generator prompt lists.
* looking up fun tropes on Fanlore.
* choosing an unusual word.
* plugging a favorite topic into your search engine and choosing a picture that looks interesting.
* anything short. I could especially use short poems today as other prompts are likely to run long.

What Is a Poetry Fishbowl?

Writing is usually considered a solitary pursuit. One exception to this is a fascinating exercise called a "fishbowl." This has various forms, but all of them basically involve some kind of writing in public, usually with interaction between author and audience. A famous example is Harlan Ellison's series of "stories under glass" in which he sits in a bookstore window and writes a new story based on an idea that someone gives him. Writing classes sometimes include a version where students watch each other write, often with students calling out suggestions which are chalked up on the blackboard for those writing to use as inspiration.

In this online version of a Poetry Fishbowl, I begin by setting a theme; today's theme is "anything goes." I invite people to suggest characters, settings, and other things of any type. Then I use those prompts as inspiration for writing poems.

Cyberfunded Creativity

I'm practicing cyberfunded creativity. If you enjoy what I'm doing and want to see more of it, please feed the Bard. The following options are currently available:

1) Sponsor the Fishbowl -- Here is a PayPal button for donations. There is no specific requirement, but $1 is the minimum recommended size for PayPal transactions since they take a cut from every one. You can also donate via check or money order sent by postal mail. If you make a donation and tell me about it, I promise to use one of your prompts. Anonymous donations are perfectly welcome, just won't get that perk. General donations will be tallied, and at the end of the fishbowl I’ll post a list of eligible poems based on the total funding; then the audience can vote on which they want to see posted.

2) Swim, Fishie, Swim! -- A feature in conjunction with fishbowl sponsorship is this progress meter showing the amount donated. There are multiple perks, the top one being a half-price poetry sale on one series when donations reach $300.

3) Buy It Now! -- Gakked from various e-auction sites, this feature allows you to sponsor a specific poem. If you don't want to wait for some editor to buy and publish my poem so you can read it, well, now you don't have to. Sponsoring a poem means that I will immediately post it on my blog for everyone to see, with the name of the sponsor (or another dedicate) if you wish; plus you get a nonexclusive publication right, so you can post it on your own blog or elsewhere as long as you keep the credits intact. You'll need to tell me the title of the poem you want to sponsor. I'm basing the prices on length, and they're comparable to what I typically make selling poetry to magazines (semi-pro rates according to Duotrope's Digest).

0-10 lines: $5
11-25 lines: $10
26-40 lines: $15
41-60 lines: $20
Poems over 60 lines, or with very intricate structure, fall into custom pricing.

4) Commission a scrapbook page. I can render a chosen poem in hardcopy format, on colorful paper, using archival materials for background and any embellishments. This will be suitable for framing or for adding to a scrapbook. Commission details are here. See latest photos of sample scrapbooked poems: "Sample Scrapbooked Poems 1-24-11"

5) Spread the word. Echo or link to this post on your Dreamwidth, other blog, Twitter, Facebook, Digg, StumbleUpon, or any other social network. Useful Twitter hashtags include #poetryfishbowl and #promptcall. Encourage people to come here and participate in the fishbowl. If you have room for it, including your own prompt will give your readers an idea of what the prompts should look like; ideally, update later to include the thumbnail of the poem I write, and a link to the poem if it gets published. If there is at least one new prompter or donor, I will post an extra freebie poem.

Additional Notes

1) I customarily post replies to prompt posts telling people which of their prompts I'm using, with a brief description of the resulting poem(s). If you want to know what's available, watch for those "thumbnails."

2) You don't have to pay me to see a poem based on a prompt that you gave me. I try to send copies of poems to people, mostly using the LJ message function. (Anonymous prompters will miss this perk unless you give me your eddress.) These are for-your-eyes-only, though, not for sharing.

3) Sponsors of the Poetry Fishbowl in general, or of specific poems, will gain access to an extra post in appreciation of their generosity. While you're on the Donors list, you can view all of the custom-locked posts in that category. Click the "donors" tag to read the archive of those. I've also posted a list of other donor perks there. I customarily leave donor names on the list for two months, so you'll get to see the perk-post from this month and next.

4) After the Poetry Fishbowl concludes, I will post a list of unsold poems and their prices, to make it easier for folks to see what they might want to sponsor.

Feed the Fish!
Now's your chance to participate in the creative process by posting ideas for me to write about. Today's theme is "anything goes." See above for details. If you manage to recommend a form that I don't recognize, I will probably pounce on it and ask you for its rules. I do have The New Book of Forms by Lewis Turco which covers most common and many obscure forms.

I'll post at least one of the fishbowl poems here so you-all can enjoy it. (Remember, you get an extra freebie poem if someone new posts a prompt or makes a donation.) The rest of the poems will go into my archive for future use.

Kenzie as go-between for She Walks In Mist. Some information needs to be exchanged; Kenzie has one foot in both worlds, and their shape-changing abilities will probably be necessary.

Or, I know a fair amount of your recent work has fallen into this category, but Food Network gets a fair amount of play out here, and spouse and I came across a series featuring two chefs with names very familiar to foodies touring Italy to which our reaction was "FOOD PR0N!".

And speaking of pr0n, what does the Lord of Pr0n have to get the ace/aro folks in the Lacuna all hot and bothered? I know that was last month, but I'm still thinking about it.

Not the same thing necessarily but I bet the Lacuna has some really excellent ASMR.

Hell to pay.. what if Lucifer and all the demons go on strike? As they're fed up with getting the blame all the time. Then Jesus joins them on the picket line, along with a bunch of guardian angels demanding better working conditions and more vacation time, what with all the stress in their job and so on...

Sure, I mean it's going to snowball pretty quickly and I'd imagine humanity probably has a few Grievances with The Management too. So, the more the merrier.

LIFC: I'd like to see Bruce and Hulk working on their relationship together. I know long fanfictions can be hard for you, since they don't bring in any money, so I'd be happy with a short scene too, if that works better. Maybe Bruce doing or saying something nice to/about Hulk, or Bruce letting Hulk do a training exercise with the other Avengers.

Polychrome Heroics
Shiv: If it hasn't been written yet and if [personal profile] dialecticdreamer doesn't have plans for it, I'd like to see more of the early stages of Halley and Shiv patching things up. Maybe something that shows Shiv going from annoyed and barely tolerating thon, to being okay interacting with thon.

Also Shiv: Seeing Shiv doing an assignment for Boss White. Maybe something on the gang side or maybe something on the club side, but I think it would be interesting to get to see Shiv in his element and see more of what he does for a living.

Dr. Infanta: When Judd went to see the speech therapist, a trade was mentioned involving Judd and Alicia going to the pony club that the speech therapist works with. (Apologies if I got some of the details wrong.) I'd love to see that, or anything with Judd working with the speech therapist.

Pain's Gray/Damask: More with Pain's Gray and Keane? Kink would be great, but so would seeing Gray help Keane negotiate with his headmates so that they don't give him such a hard time and also let him get what he needs.

Unspecified Universe: I don't have a setting in mind for this one, so whatever you think fits is fine. It would be really nice to see something where romantic/sexual relationships are *not* focused on as the main and most important kind of interaction, so two people of differing gender interacting doesn't automatically lead to "Oh, you two are/want to bang." Or, alternately, a situation where a rumor like that gets started but the other people around squash it *with prejudice* and make sure the rumor starter knows that that kind of behaviour is not okay.

>>It would be really nice to see something where romantic/sexual relationships are *not* focused on as the main and most important kind of interaction, so two people of differing gender interacting doesn't automatically lead to "Oh, you two are/want to bang." <<

There was a Star Trec fanfic that had a culture which did this; they were a very mixed group of refugees, so your partner or partners (who were primary bonds and often raised kids together) were usually Platonic Life Partner(s), as a result of Interspecies Relationships being the norm. (No guarantee of compatible sexualities or compatible biology.)

This lead to it being considered polite to set your partner(s) up with compatible folks for one-night stands, if they were inclined towards one night stands. Which started a cukture clash with the Star Trek crew, as being invited to 'commit adultery' was taken as an insult.

And I had a funny idea I should write down where because of cultural oddness several people who hate each other get stuck at an akward meet-the-family style thing... because their mutual friends are from a very tractive culture that considers non-exclusive Life Partnership to be akin to marriage. (Plus the whole very confusing cultural explanation: "Soo are you-all...[mimes kissing]" [Squick face] "Eeew gross! No! We cosleep, and coparent, and randomly borrow each others stuff, but we're not, like, /kissing/.")

One thing I've noticed: It is comparatively easyish to tell how important a relationship is. It is much more difficult (especially across cultural barriers) to tell /what kind/ of relationship it is.

Was watching the feminist fantasy remake of Charmed, and had a few thoughts:
-it should be Gender Studies not Women's Studies,
- the female characters should look realistic not like 20-something models,
- learning magic should take time/practice,
- often a Mundane Solution would usually be better / safer than magic
- if magic existed there'd be a lot of spillover between the worlds - less an Enforced Masquerade and more everyone politely ignoring stuff for convenience or profit
- people are not going to be conditioned enough to commit murder a few weeks after learning of the hidden magical world
- good vs evil... is a lot more complicated than you'd think; not all demons will be bad and not all Angel's will be good - in fact, most folks will just want to live their lives.
So what would a less ...flashy... "witches save the world" story be like?

Also saw a commercial for one of those "call the eldritch monster 3x in the mirror" horror movies. What if the instead of eating the summoner, the monster shows up to /protect/ the the summoner; i.e. from a hate crime? It's also possible that a protector-monster could 'steal away' their protectorate - a crappy and scary deal for someone with a good life, but an eminently sensible offer to someone who has no place and no people on this earth.

The opposite of Culture Clash [culture synergy?], especially when it runs counter to expectations. As in:
- women may get along nicely with religiously conservative men (of whatever denomination) who take the "he who looks at a woman with lust in his heart has already sinned" bit seriously
- cats and introverts get along swimmingly
- I imagine you could get a situation where very different people unite in favor of a common goal (i.e pacifists and soldiers uniting to keep people from dying pointlessly)

I remember there was a discussion in the notes around here at one point about aliens accidentally teleporting their planet into our solar system with advanced physics, and the humans and aliens have to establish First Contact and then do long distance disaster relief. (Building bridges between very different people and long-distance disaster relief seems... meaningful, with everything that is going on.) Also, Venusian cloud cities. :)

Anything involving respectful interaction and discussion of differences.

Maldivian saltwater and Everglades/Amazon River freshwater soup hospitals?

Also, river dolphins in Terramagne... (I wonder if any if the sexbots might choose to change their species "presentation"...?)

I don't have her name handy, but I'd like to see how the former sexbot that Edison and Elizabeth repaired gets settled, and if she makes human friends over time or some of the other bots join her.

A lot of the freedom AIs ended up in Thalassia,IIRC. Will they integrate into that culture or form their own enclave? And where will Hatter fit into that? Because for all he's apparently organic, he considers himself a digital person. (I have visions of Genna creating a curriculum for Healthy Humaning 101.)

Shiv, at one point, made a shelter for a semi-feral catermelon. Was that the end of it, or was he involved with the kittens? Shiv is such a human model feral cat himself; I can see where that would give him a better understanding of how to interact with feline ferals than most bipedals have.

*Can we get more about any of the digital people who fled China during the blackout? We know, so far, how three of those Heron helped rescue (Niu Le, Qin Yuán, and Guai Qiao) landed, but I'd love to know about absolutely anybody else. I admit to wondering especially about Still_Life and Hou Weici|Floating_Lotus - I can't remember Still_Life's name, and if I goofed Floating_Lotus's family name, sorry about that. But I'll take any and all you want to write about this group of no-longer-doll refugees.

*Speaking of refugees, how is Abrihet Senai|Hope doing, and what's she up to now? There was talk of her becoming literate in Tigrinya and Italian, and possibly training for rescue work. How's that going, or *is* that going?

*Looping back around, remember the truck full of trafficked people Cuoio and the Marionettes rescued on an Italian road? Here's a vote for anything about how any of them are settling in, wherever that might be. There was a Nigerian girl with training as a goat herder, a Polish girl with cow traits, a couple of cat-featured people... and ooh, that was the initial meeting with Boarskin, wasn't it?

My prompts have a theme tonight. Blame events halfway around the world. :(

One of Abredin's priests comes to one of Shaeth's temples looking for assistance with medicinals that use alcohol as a base (and that need to be palatable and safe for patients who may be very ill).

Someone who wound up on Shaeth's doorstep after self-medicating aggressively with alcohol in response to a difficult life event has managed, with the temple's support, to put themself back together enough that they no longer feel the need get smashed, and perhaps wish to pick up (some of) the pieces of of their former life. Sorting through how to do this and what relationship, if any, they wish to maintain with Shaeth & company going forward is a fraught conversation for both sides.

What's Glenta doing as Shaeth's network expands?

Koravi turns up again, with a more complicated proposal than the previous gift of warding baubles.
