Scifi had been proposing this for years - don't Pernese dragons and Pandoran wildlife both have metal endoskeletons?
(Hmm..might be an interesting use of biotech...have an alien coral garden, but if the skeletons are some sort of metal, one could 'forge' metals without a forge. Earth plants have been used to grow living furniture and structures.)
