These are the setting and content notes for "Who Puts Their Life on the Line."

The pawn shop has a large parking lot with lawn equipment outside under the awning.

The inside has large electronics on shelves, small ones in cases, music, more yard and garden tools, videos, weapons, and other assorted items.

"The police officer who puts their life on the line with no superpowers, no X-Ray vision, no super-strength, no ability to fly, and above all no invulnerability to bullets, reveals far greater virtue than Superman - who is only a mere superhero."
-- Eliezer Yudkowsky

Soldier skills include gun combat and close combat. Gang skills overlap a lot. Boss Blaster and Pug are both familiar with this; Cas isn't, so the first step is to put the noncombatant in a protected spot.

Covering fire discourages opponents from shooting. There are instructions for casualty care under fire and tactical combat casualty care. Regrettably Cas knows none of this.

There are various ways of moving a casualty. The shoulder drag requires the rescuer to bend over, which is normally a nuisance but a safety asset in a firefight.

A semi-automatic weapon resets itself automatically but requires manual trigger activation to fire each round. This adds a minimum amount of time between each round. In Terramagne, an enhanced semi-automatic weapon borrows some features from automatic construction such that it can be fired as fast as the trigger is pulled -- even at super-speed -- but still lacks a full-automatic mode. The speed of an enhanced weapon in speedster hands can equal that of an automatic weapon in ordinary hands.

"Cop-killer" bullets come in various types, with ironically countervailing features. Armor-piercing bullets reduce or negate the safety factor of personal armor and some types of cover. However, they don't tend to deform or tumble in the body, making comparatively smaller injuries. Hollow-point bullets spread and tumble on impact, doing massive damage of the "in like a penny, out like a pizza" type. Some are designed to fragment. However, this dissipates their energy, so they rarely have enough velocity to injure anyone behind the primary victim, nor do they penetrate armor or even light cover such as plaster walls. "Safety rounds" are actually in this category. Ammunition is controversial.

Ever since Cas started working as the gang's patcher, he has carried a small hip kit for first aid. This is the type of "everyday carry" kit recommended or handed out to people who have just gotten their booboo card, or for the basic first aid classes offered to teens and adults. It's hyperlight and good for treating the most common complaints like scrapes, splinters, blisters, and bug bites. He probably uses it several times a day, because so many people work with their hands. But it's completely insufficient for travel on dangerous streets, for which a hyperlight trauma kit is needed. Cas needs to talk with Molly about what he should be packing.

Wilderness first aid has basic and advanced instructions. It focuses on the threshold of what can be handled in the field vs. what needs evacuation to professional care, but it accounts for the fact that care may be a significant distance away. Cas has taken a good series of classes on this topic, but they focused on typical outdoor injuries, not gunshot wounds. He actually did quite well in finding a comparison to an injury type covered in class.

A bang room is a teleport pad inside a hospital or other place where emergency care is readily available. Some major hospitals have one. Most of the landing pads for Kraken and the Marionettes are maintained with this in mind, because supervillains get shot at regularly. Sometimes it's called a bang pad.

It is crucial to provide emotional first aid after trauma. Know how to comfort an upset person. There are instructions for helping someone shower. It is vitally important to wash after a calamity, to help separate from it, as well as to remove physical contaminants. Local-American hospitals tend to be terrible at this for anyone who is not substantially injured, so somebody else needs to make sure that folks aren't sitting around covered in bad memories and biohazards.

Wrapping a traumatized person in something soft is soothing. Cotton is a good choice. This is the gray jogging suit that Cas wears after losing his original outfit while saving a life.

Comfort food is essential during emergencies. Something mild and soothing is best when stress might upset digestion. Avoid red foods after messy medical incidents. This Potato-Leek Soup runs about 511 calories.
