You should check out Per Helldorffs automata,
the best thing? He makes them without any power tools (except for drills), just knives and handsaws.

Wow. Those are impressive.
I also love
strandbeests
. It's so easy to imagine how an alien planet could evolve creatures that move by wind power instead of biochemical muscle motion.
