My partner Doug tipped me to this fascinating site that describes a pie for every state.  Sadly, no recipes, but there are lots of pictures.

The interesting thing is that the pies are made by an immigrant as a way of getting to know America.  That's a great idea.  You see it a lot more in Terramagne than here, this sort of methodical discovering and bonding process, but it's not the first example I've seen.  Basically, you pick something you love, and then find a way to iterate that across your new home.  You might read all the books set in your new home state, or learn to identify its wildflowers, or try to see all its birds, or visit all its museums, etc.

The photos with their cutout shapes of coyotes and buffalos and such are fantastic!

Clicking on the pix gives a description and with some imagination, perhaps one could dummy up a recipe. It takes more than a novice cook's expertise, tho.

The regional pie for our area is the classic pork pie.

Since we moved north I've been trying to learn the trees here. There are a LOT that don't grow in the south so I had only ever read about them and a few surprises that are common in both places (cottonwood of all things!)

The NY entry is a delight. Though I don't know about Illinois. Pumpkin pie is the state pie? I didn't know that. I wouldn't have guessed that.

As someone who spent most of her life in Texas I am deeply disappointed in the Texas entry. There is just no excuse for that pie to not involve pecans.

Darn, they haven't done Wisconsin yet. I saw the page of presumed images of all 50 pies, but the pie-ary page only goes up through Utah. Does the WI pie have a listed name that anyone saw?

Connecticut pie looks like mashed potatoes dusted with cinnamon sugar? I'm somewhat alarmed now. :D

I love the bison cutouts on the Colorado pie, though - the browing makes them both stand out and appear more realistic, which is a nice touch.
