In many cultures within the US, it's customary to bring food to the bereaved family - a casserole, or something they can serve to their other visitors. When my mother died, I baked a pound cake. My mother taught me how to bake cakes, and I knew she'd approve of it. We didn't have very many visitors, except for her neighbors and my father's employer.
