For my current set of tips, I'm using the list "101 Small Ways You Can Improve Your City.

46. Take the bus. "Get lost in your city. Often times we avoid certain areas or simply stay within our comfort zone, but the true city dweller should attempt to reach all areas of the place they call home. You'll be surprised to find that not everything you read—both positive and negative—is true." — Germane Barnes, architect, designer, and city planner, Opa-Locka, Florida

Worth considering, but I note that this exercise is much safer for some people and in some places than others.  For people with disabilities, it is an advanced navigation skill.

One of the things I used to do was pick a bus or train and ride it to the end and back. It was a great way to learn what was available along transit routes (which can totally change one's notion of what is "close" or "convenient").

Some cities make a point to connect their bus systems to the neighboring towns. HOWEVER, before even attempting this CALL BOTH SYSTEMS, and confirm the "official" information on the website. "Yeah, Yellow bus arrives at 2:15, and you'll need a transfer to Smalltown Shuttle, which is an extra charge, but that's all." is very likely from one side. Then you call Smalltown Shuttle and discover that they have changed parameters, cut service, (meaning that you can't get back to the transfer point for pickup again that DAY) or otherwise added obstacles that aren't on the website... yet. It's as much a matter of keeping bus-reliant people out of the more affluent small town as it is miscommunication between the two systems.

That's even before bringing in problems with noncompliant bus stops (not accessible to someone pushing a stroller, let alone a rollator or wheelchair).
