Almost every time I've had to do this, it has been to compensate for non-standard needs (language, disability, dietary restrictions...), or chaperoning kids.
The few other times are mostly my being an anxious person.
Aaaand, you eventually get a reputation for being the Prepared One. (I started joking with coworkers that I Do Not have alien repellant in my purse, so if aliens invaded they'd have to figure ot out themselves.)
