These are the location and content notes for "Gone the Sun."

Local-America has the Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas. Terramagne-America has the Westbord Baptist Church in California. Same hate, different place.

See the exterior of the Westbord Baptist Church.

Arlington National Cemetery is located in Arlington County, Virginia, just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. This military cemetery spans 624 acres and dates back to the Civil War.

"Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression."
-- The Bible, 1 Tim. 2:11-14

Many variations of this litany have appeared in treaties with First Nations (all broken) and it's also a way of saying, "Life goes on" or "The world is what it is."

The circles represent the duration of the treaty signed by Chief Crowfoot on September 22, 1877; as long as the sun shines, the grass grows and the water flows.

See the front and back of Dr. Infanta's mourning brooch. Mourning jewelry commonly includes black stones such as jet, but amethyst and pearl also appear. Often it was engraved with the name and dates of the deceased. Exact customs varied over time and place and should not be considered absolutes. Dr. Infanta has a pearl-and-amethyst brooch typical of later mourning, worn to a funeral, because Queen Victoria emptied a personal jewelrybox so her friends could have something in a situation where there would soon be no mourning supplies left to buy in all of Britannia. They made do with what they had on hand. Read about Albert, Prince Consort.

A Caisson Platoon serves in military or occasionally other service funerals, such as for police. The Riderless Horse wears black tack and has boots reversed in the stirrups to represent the departed.

Similarly, a black carriage sometimes appears in formal funerals. Funeral tack usually consists of matte black leather and blackened metal, with a headdress of black ostrich plumes.

"See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is."
-- The Bible, 1 John 3:1-2

"Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not."

People grieve celebrity deaths for many reasons. Here are some ways to take care of yourself. See also my Grief Questionnaire and Dealing with Grief posts.

"SPOON in Every Pot" tells how the organization started.

"The (Un)Whole Truth" explains how Whammy Lass and Eugene Jacoby started a more honest line of toy soldiers.

Mourning veils come in feminine and masculine styles, chiefly distinguished by the hat rather than the veil itself, so other-gendered folks can use whatever hat style they prefer as an anchor. In addition to providing coverage from people staring at you while you cry, they also hide when someone has to take off makeup. (It really does worsen eye irritation if you cry a lot, so it's better to attend funerals bare-faced, but that makes some people very uncomfortable.) Terramagne makes more use of mourning veils, for all genders, compared to here.

Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, from the hills, from the sky;
All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.
-- "Taps"

An Eternal Flame is a fire kept burning at a tomb or memorial. They usually have a supply of fuel oil or similar, but this one was created with superpowers and sustains itself from ambient energy.

Face wipes and cold cream (also available in travel size) offer ways of removing makeup. So if you always feel useless when you go to a funeral, pack a bag with tissues, face wipes, and cold cream. You will absolutely not be useless: you will be a hero.

Dice have a deep history and are among the most portable games, for which countless rule sets exist.
You can buy cheap packs of dice, or slightly more expensive ones with several rule sets. The most economical approach is to buy bulk dice and bag them in sets, then print some game rules to go with each set.

Therefore, here's another bag you can pack for a funeral: travel games for kids and other people who need a distraction. Go for things that are small and cheap enough to give away, and preferably versatile. A deck of cards, dice, jacks, string for cat's cradle, finger puppets, mini-puzzle books, 8-pack crayons and a palm-size notepad, chalk, fidget toys, etc. can all work depending on context. Look at party stores, dollar stores, or rummage sales, where you can often get packages of stuff really cheap. If you're crafty, you can make your own games. Either memorize some games or include some handouts for them. No matter how disdraught the immediate family is, somebody else always drags along kids who didn't even know the deceased, and kids who knew them only slightly will often be sad for five minutes then get bored.

Variel, Erion, and Ansel appeared in "Foursquare."
