These are the notes for "Gone the Sun." As this is about a funeral, be aware that many of the links will be sad or otherwise intense.
Philip Frederickson -- He has fair skin, blue eyes, and short gray hair. He is reasonably fit for his age, with plenty of stamina. He is 87 years old in 2016. Philip serves as the leader of the Westbord Baptist Church. It is not actually a valid Baptist Church, despite the claims; and Philip is not a seminary-trained pastor, but rather got an online ordination through a rather skeevy source. This has not stopped the congregation from building up several hundred zealots attracted by the charismatic bigot. They enjoy picketing solemn events to spread their message of hate -- and they hate pretty much everything from Atheists to Zoroastrians, with a particular despite for homosexuals and people with superpowers. When they picketed Granny Whammy's funeral, however, Dr. Infanta killed Philip for breaking a truce she had declared.
Qualities: Expert (+4) Charisma, Good (+2) Memory, Good (+2) Persistent, Good (+2) Stamina
Poor (-2) Asshole
Joseph Elkdog -- He has long straight black hair, black eyes, and light copper skin. He stands 6' tall, with a sturdy frame and a long oblong face. He belongs to the Blackfeet tribe, and is the older half-brother of She Walks in Mist. Because Joseph was born when their mother was fairly young, she sent him to live with his father, and he grew up mostly in urban areas. He has learned more about Blackfeet culture over time. She Walks in Mist, born later, was raised on the reservation by their mother. That makes their relationship a little challenging, but they love each other dearly.
Joseph is the leader of a mostly Native American motorcycle gang, the Iron Horses. That is, all of them were born somewhere in North America, and a majority are wholly or partly tribal in heritage. This cultural medley means that the Iron Horses never fit in perfectly in the native or the mainstream society. They are quasi-outlaw heroes, some rougher than others; they do things like hosting giveaways and protecting abuse survivors (sometimes fatally for the abuser). Joseph leads his people into battle when necessary, and is a powerful fighter.
Origin: The longstanding dispute between tribal and biker cultures over Bear Butte and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally reached an odd crossroads when a young "city Indian" rode his bike up the mountain ... and then safely back down again, bike perfectly intact, in possession of a vision and rather more sense than he went up with. He began studying his Blackfeet heritage and gathering members to form a motorcycle gang.
Uniform: Brown leathers with the gang patch. The center of the patch shows a motorcycle/horse hybrid. The top rocker says Iron Horses. The bottom rocker names the home reservation for that band of the gang, although most bands have a mix of members from different places, not all of them from any reservation. The patches are made with traditional Blackfeet quillwork, which along with the leathers often requires teamwork from several members; other decorations on the leathers may reflect the wearer's own tribe if not Blackfeet. Weather permitting, men who have done the Sun Dance go shirtless under their vests to display their scars. Members typically wear their hair loose or in long braids. Each bike has a medicine bag attached between the handlebars so the spirits can recognize it.
Qualities: Master (+6) Biker, Expert (+4) Leader, Good (+2) Blackfeet Culture, Good (+2) Humility, Good (+2) Mechanic
Poor (-2) Torn Between Two Worlds
Powers: Expert (+4) Horse Totem, Average (0) Nature-sense
Good (+2) Motorcycle: Expert (+4) Magical Protection, Good (+2) Elusive, Good (+2) Fast
Average (0) Minions: The Iron Horses have 7 named lieutenants and dozens of additional members. Lieutenants have qualities of Expert (+4) Biker and another Good; plus powers of a Good (+2) Totem and another Average (0) superpower. Each Iron Horse has an Average (0) Motorcycle with Good (+2) Magical protection and two other Good qualities. They all share the same weakness of Poor (-2) Torn Between Two Worlds.
Motivation: Protect Turtle Island and promote unity among her people.

Joseph Elkdog's motorcycle has horses painted on it.
Fireheart (Atka Lecoeur) -- He has tinted skin, golden-brown eyes, and long straight black hair. His body temperature naturally runs around 100ºF and he needs extra calories to sustain his powers. His heritage is primarily Native Canadian (Inuit and Anishinaabeg) with a little French and British ancestry. He has worked as a wilderness guide and a counselor. He fell in love with Jackie Frost, a superhera with Ice Powers.
Origin: As a teenager, Atka went camping with some friends, and a terrible storm blew up. They almost died of hypothermia, but then his Fire Powers manifested and saved everyone.
Uniform: Usually warm, durable clothes suitable for the wilderness.
Qualities: Expert (+4) Woodslore, Good (+2) Family Ties, Good (+2) Mediation, Good (+2) Cold Tolerance
Poor (-2) Not a City Boy
Powers: Expert (+4) Fire Powers, Good (+2) Phasing
Vulnerability: Copper shorts out his superpowers with a painful shower of sparks.
Motivation: Keep the home fires burning.
Backdraft (Gilbert Brenton) -- He has milk-pale skin, flame-blue eyes, and wild hair streaked in fire colors. His body is short and slim. Gilbert is homosexual and can be very flamboyant about it. He reacts badly to prejudice against queerfolk, even though it's not his primary motivation. There is a lot of unresolved sexual tension between him and Green Man. Given his sassy nature, Backdraft usually wins their flyting.
Despite his vendetta against the government, he only attacks buildings while they are mostly empty. He doesn't want to hurt people, and isn't completely confident of his fire control yet. So he waits until he has at most a few security guards to neutralize and move to a safer spot. Backdraft also takes a dim view of terrorists who target innocent bystanders, particularly ones like the IRA who started out bombing government offices and devolved to bombing schoolbuses. More recently, he has targeted banks and credit agencies, destroying their records with fire and hacking to wipe out debts and mortgages. Sometimes he goes after large businesses with pernicious practices. His theme music is Leslie Fish's Firestorm album.
Origin: Gay bashers beat him up, tied him to a post, and tried to set him on fire. It did not go well for them, and they wound up in the hospital with severe burns. He wound up with superpowers. When nobody would press charges against the gay-bashers, he stated a goal of burning down the government, starting with the local city hall.
Uniform: Scarlet and orange swirled dexflan with gold boots and gloves, and a flame-cut cape of gold capery. Leather half-mask has a fire design, yellow at the top, then orange, and deep blue at the base.
Qualities: Expert (+4) Computer Wizard, Good (+2) Activist, Good (+2) Fast, Good (+2) Sassy
Poor (-2) I'll Show You a Flaming Fag!
Powers: Expert (+4) Invulnerability, Good (+2) Fire Powers (Signature Stunts: Fire Blast, Fire Shield, Firestopping, Firetripping; Spin-Off Stunts: Fire Form, Ignite Passion)
Equipment: Good (+2) Sleep Ray Bolt Pistol
Vulnerability: Wanted Man. Police generally recognize him and will try to arrest him if they can, although they rarely have the means. They may call a BASH team or superhero if possible.
Motivation: Bring it down!
Live Ball (Sebastian Brookins) -- He has sorrel skin, brown eyes, and nappy black hair shaved off except for a soul patch of beard. He grew up in Harlem, Onion City, Illinois where he played basketball with exceptional skill. Sebastian earned a full scholarship to Northwestern University, where he studied toward a major in Psychology with a minor in African-American Studies. His superpowers first began flickering in his freshman year, and by fall of his sophomore year they became impossible to conceal. He got kicked off the basketball team, and although he was allowed to finish the spring semester, his scholarship was not renewed. Since he couldn't afford to pay for college himself, he had to drop out. He still mightily resents the exclusion of soups from athletics -- and thus, other parts of life such as college that may depend on that. Live Ball seeks to make the sporting world stop mistreating soups and include them. His tactics are mostly aboveboard, but he relates far better to gray hats than white ones.
Origin: His very poor high school received a government shipment of nutritional supplements for the athletes. Most of the recipients reported no effects, but some got sick, one died, and Sebastian developed superpowers that grew in slowly over the next several years.
Uniform: He wears primarily athleisure clothes in shades of black, gray, and white accented with gas-blue and flame-orange.
Qualities: Expert (+4) Basketball, Expert (+4) Teamwork, Good (+2) Street Smart
Poor (-2) Resentment Over Exclusion
Powers: Expert (+4) Energy Powers
Live Ball manipulates energy in various ways. He can compress energy into a sphere that can be thrown, or imbue energy into objects, with various effects. He can create walls of energy, too, but they require an anchor such as the ground or another wall. He can also use energy to boost his physical abilities, such as speed or agility. He even absorbs energy thrown at him as an attack. However, strong emotion tends to make him give off sparks, and he can only suppress that to a point.
Motivation: Force the sporting world to include athletes with superpowers.
Live Ball: A ball in play.
Energy Powers include Energy Manipulation, Energy Ball Projection, Energy Wall Generation, Energy Empowerment, and Energy Absorption among other possibilities.

This allows students to further specialize in one of the Department's strength, or to continue to broadly sample the range of scholarly production in the field. Any substitutions must be approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
365 – Black Chicago
Surveys the social, cultural, and political history of African Americans in Chicago, including: the Great Migration; the black political machine; black Chicago music; racial segregation; internal class stratification; and the role of black churches.
378 – Harlem Renaissance
African American political and social movements and cultural production in theater, music, visual arts, and literature from 1915 to 1930. Prerequisites: 210-0 or another African American literature course.
380-0-21 – Topics: Feeling Black/Black Feeling
This course introduces and investigates the matter of black feeling. Does blackness have a feeling? What emotional baggage accompanies racial difference? How do emotions inform, distort, and even precede our notions of race and culture? And how do all types of feelings, personal and public, shape or interrogate the project of racial representation? Drawing together seminal and lesser-known works in African American literature with secondary texts from affect theory, black studies, postcolonial theory, and Afro-pessimism, we will explore the messy entwinement of blackness and emotion and identify how this entwinement is variously represented across the African American literary tradition.
380-0-23 – Topics: Black Theology: From Black Power to Black Lives Matter
The Black Theology: From Black Power to Black Lives Matter course, engages Black Theology and its encounters with various historical moments, thinkers, philosophies, and theologies. Black Theology founder, James Cone, will sit at the center the course, as we discuss Black Theology's grappling with the American Liberal Theology, the Black Power Movement, African American Humanism, Womanist Theology, Black Marxism, Black Pragmatism, the Obama Era, and the Black Lives Matter Movement.
Captain Valor (Brian McKinley) -- He has fair skin, blue eyes, and blond hair. He stands 6'6" tall and weighs around 290 pounds. Tattoos on his left arm include an American flag. He is married to Deirdre Braden. Brian's cover job involves working at a community center, often with disadvantaged youth. He can always get away from work by claiming a "client emergency," which is even true, just for a slightly different set of clients. Brian puts in so many hours that nobody ever complains. In high school and college, he played football as a center, and still enjoys it for recreation.
Captain Valor works as a superhero, and he is an excellent frontline fighter for stopping supervillains in the midst of a crime. He also does public outreach. He has helped to produce a series of comic booklets for children, intended to be handed out in civics classes. Some of these he has illustrated himself, with live photographs or ball-jointed dolls posed on sets. The two rules of writing Captain Valor are:
1) The Captain is always good.
2) The Captain always finds a way to convey a moral message in each episode.
Origin: In college, Brian made friends with some talented people and got a battlesuit out of it.
Uniform: Under the battlesuit, Captain Valor wears an undersuit of dexflan reinforced with krevel, in a blue camouflage pattern. For cape work that doesn't require the battlesuit, he also has a blue camouflage uniform with a matching hood, in a slightly different pattern. Off-duty, he dresses in practical men's clothes.

Poor (-2) Ignoring Evil
Powers: Good (+2) Battlesuit
Vulnerability: Heavy automation leaves the battlesuit susceptible to hacking.
The battlesuit provides super-level agility, endurance, speed, and strength.
Motivation: To teach right by doing right.
Photography of ball-joined dolls is an art form of its own. Many people enjoy making photostories this way. Captain Valor's settings are simple, practical ones such as a bedroom, couch, or porch swing. In this comic, characters discuss going to the prom.
El Grullo / The Villain Wrangler (Christofor Allard) -- He has fair skin that tans easily, brown eyes, and short mousy hair. He comes from mixed Hispanic and American ancestry. Cristofor earned a Bachelor's Degree in English with a minor in Peacebuilding and Social Innovation from the University of San Diego. As his interest in volunteerism deepened, he pursued a Master's Degree in Nonprofit Leadership and Management. He is short and bookish and not very imposing, until he starts talking. Then people listen.
Cristofor is a househusband who volunteers at local organizations including schools and libraries, the Starbright Foundation (similar to Make a Wish), and the Kiwanis Club. His wife Cynthia works in marketing for Tsavorite Technology, a major player in sustainable industry based on retro-engineering. He has an older son, Timo, and a younger daughter, Drina. They live in Westbord. He has a knack for dealing with supervillains and convincing them to volunteer when a Starbright child requests a visit from them.

Qualities: Good (+2) Bilingual, Good (+2) Gymnast

Erion Belushi -- Currently nine years old, Erion grew up in a toxic neighborhood. He has wavy brown hair, gray eyes, and light olive skin. Origin: The playgrounds in his neighborhood were landscaped with contaminated sand that made some people sick, but gave superpowers to a few.
Qualities: Good (+2) Patience, Good (+2) Sports
Poor (-2) Dyslexic
Powers: Expert (+4) Natural Armor
Blue Law (Veril Edinger) -- He has azure skin, sky blue eyes, and Yale blue hair slicked back. He is short and slight, but physically fit, and quick on his feet. His low tolerance for alcohol means that it takes very little to affect him and soon makes him sick, so he doesn't drink and prefers to avoid foods made with alcohol. Veril has a master's degree in philosophy. That and his mellow personality made him a good cop. After developing superpowers, he retired from police work in favor of freelance public safety. Veril handles public relations for his team because he's good with people.
Origin: Someone bombed a First Responders training camp. He was one of the three people to develop superpowers as a result. Their shared origin and Telempathy give the Primaries a team link which helps them make plans and coordinate their powers.

Veril handles public relations for his team because he's good with people.
